Caruso ENGL 1102 9 April 2012 Loves Tragedy: Real Feelings Hidden Love is defined as a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, for a parent, child, or friend. Tragedy is defined as an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe. This movie is the perfect example of how two completely different words LOVE & TRAGEDY can sadly come together as one. Loves Tragedy is the story of three Hututsitwa women, with three different ethnic backgrounds, who all meet and become best friends, despite that their ethnic group has either been ignored, is the most powerful, or victims of mass killings. This story is based on the events of the Tutsi being reduced in rank, and the rise of the Hutu power from the year of 1973 to 1994. It is also based on the Rwandan assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana, and the culture of the three dominant ethnic groups the Hutu, the Tutsi, and the Twa. Through hardships, decline in power, and the tribulations of the genocide, the three women could not hold on to their love, because in the end true feelings are revealed through the most shocking catastrophic events. Loves Tragedy unfolds everyday life of the three women before the genocide, and it reveals the direct perspective of each race, individually and not altogether just as the movie Hotel Rwanda did. The most intended purpose of this movie is to depict that trust was very hard to come by during the Rwandan genocide and in full respect to the actual happenings of this genocide, the story setting and the characters are fictional, but they are based on true events. For a clear picture of the characters being presented, real life celebrity actresses and actors were chosen who are best qualified to represent the character roles. Denise, who is played

Bryant 2 by Angela Basset, was born and raised in Hututsitwa, and she belongs to the Hututsi (Tutsi) tribe. Denise is very successful; she was secretary of her senior class, and after graduating school, Denise became the CEO of Square Gold & PR Marketing. Denise came from a family that is very wealthy, which happened right after the Belgians moved to this country. Denise is the daughter of Juvenal Ross the leader of Hututsitwa. Denises parents have hate for the Hutusti in the movie (Tutsi in genocide), because they took the name POWER, to an extremity and they are following Tutu (Hutu in genocide) orders. Denise plays the role as the mystery villain in this movie, Denise is united with her true feelings during the climax of the movie, remembrance of the struggle of her people, and the assassination of the president is what triggers her catastrophic actions. Jennifer, who is played by Sandra Bullock was born in Hututsitwa, and her race is Bazungu, but she is originally from Germany. Bazungu people primarily liked Tutu, but before departing Hututsitwa power was changed to Hututsi. Even though Jennifer is the CEO of one of the most successful Rwandan banks, her family is very rich and powerful, and they are not racist towards the Tutu and the Hututsi, but they werent acquaintances either. Morally, Jennifer and her parents are great people, but they have tremendous ambition for power, their goal in life is to be successful and for their child Jennifer to follow in their footsteps. Jennifers father, Joseph is lieutenant of the UN forces. Jennifer plays the role of a protagonist and she will run into conflicts with Denise after the turning point of the movie. Because of Denises family is so close with the official power of Rwanda and the elimination of Hututsi, she is very suspenseful when it comes to Denise and her family. The last main character of the movie is Nadine, who is role is played by Tracee Ellis Ross. Nadine was also born in Hututsitwa, but her ethnicity is Tutu. Tutu people are

Bryant 3 generally the most complacent during this era of Rwandan time. They associated with all ethnic groups in Rwanda, all though things were much different before the initial time period in this movie. Nadine is indeed successful as CEO of the main Oil Refinery in Hututsitwa. Her parents are very educated but they are not as pertinent in the position of power in Hututsitwa. Nadine also plays the role of a protagonist, and her family runs into conflicts during the turning point of the movie, and as she deals with her family issues, she is also flabbergasted with conflicts with Denise as well. Major plot points mostly occur during the turning point of Loves Tragedy. The first scene gives background to the audience, revealing flashback scenes of the Hututsi rebels killing innocent people during their position of power. It also includes a meeting of the NU forces (which is the appointed federal military group for Hututsitwa) with the Belgians who had appointed the Hututsi as executive power over the country, but only under the Bazungu. The meeting establishes the transition of power, from the Hututsi to the Tutu. Beginning scenes subsequent to the initial scene, introduces the main characters and their families, and it also reveals how the three women initially meet, which is through their senior year of high school. These beginning scenes will also reveal each families true perspective of the politics of Hututsitwa. The girls become the best of friends, and even after graduation they vow to always keep close and to stay in contact, the three also plan a reunion dinner for 5 years later. So 5 years later after living their own individual lives, the three meet up for dinner accompanied with their new husbands. There were deep conversations of the establishment of their new families, gossip and politics. After a fun filled dinner, Denise gets a call from her father, warning her and her friends of an invasion of the Tutu rebels, which is taking place in her hometown, the invasion of the Tutu rebels against the new leaders the Hututsi, is the turning

Bryant 4 point of Loves Tragedy. After the invasion, Nadine witnesses more and more deaths of the Tutu, and she calls her friends because she is in fear of her family dying too. After a big meeting takes place which includes all of the families, it turns out that the love was not strong enough within to come to a consensus. Eventually the decision is made the Denises family could not take Nadines family in for shelter because they would be considered traitors to Tutu power. So Jennifers family agrees to take them in until they leave from Hututsitwa. The result of this decision means that the girls are to be separated. After having such a long friendship such as this, the girls decide that they are old enough to make their own decisions, so they decide to meet each other somewhere, despite the fact their parents ordered them not to be out anywhere. So a meeting is arranged for the Kigali airport and they all share the information they have learned about through these killings. The last scene named Cut the Tall Trees reveals the extremity of catastrophic events and mass killings of the entire movie. It also reveals the shocking killings of the main characters, and this story of love and honesty turns into a very distrustful situation, and everyone dies. Loves Tragedy is a movie that includes so many genres, that there is no specific intended audience for the movie. But analyzing the content of the movies brings me to conclusion that Loves Tragedy targets young adults and adults. It will target them because majority of young adults are taught about the Rwandan genocide during school years, that way the concept and history should be familiar. Finally you are left with my intended genre for this film. This genre is a drama/tragedy film, and the majority of audiences for drama is young adults and above. This movie is not intended for toddlers or young children because of the violence, and the difficulty level of understanding the plot. I strongly believe that my intended audience will react positive towards this concept.
Comment [L10]: Re-word Comment [L9]: I re-worded this to give you more hints as to what happens. But I dont want you to get all of the details. Because all of the details are very quick, so through explaining, it wont take long to reveal the complete ending and tragedy of the story. Comment [L8]: Re-word Comment [L7]: Re-word

Bryant 5 In conclusion, I know that this movie can form into an actual production. Even though this movie is similar in history to the movie Hotel Rwanda, Loves Tragedy gives the exclusive perspective of each ethnic group rather than one big perspective. The purpose of me creating this film was using three girls to reveal the three views of the Rwandan Genocide. It was also to show the mass killings of the genocide to verify the intensity of hate crimes committed to the audience. Since my historical event was such a tragic event, I used love between the three girls to soften the mood for the majority of the movie. Just because the violent scenes that I want to include are enough horror for my audience, and that is why I am not sure of the rating of this movie. The inspiration/universe will certainly be included in this film. I will include all Rwandan culture as possible such as food, clothing, and home living. There will also be footage of actual vehicles, used homes, and reality businesses. This movies production is to ensure the viewers of the culture of Rwanda, the views of different ethnic groups in Rwanda, and the practicality of Rwandas beautiful edifice.
Comment [L11]: Here I added a lot more to conclude my paper. I was not satisfied with it in the first paper. Comment [L12]: Also, and I really tried my hardest to be more clear, and I used what my colleagues and you suggested for the improvement of this paper.
