This document summarizes an investigation into the design of planar springs for free piston Stirling engines. Stirling engines can harness thermal energy more efficiently than traditional fossil fuels. The investigation aims to model different planar spring designs for a free piston Stirling engine using simulation software to analyze performance under various conditions. Planar springs were found to reduce engine size and stresses compared to conventional spiral springs. Finite element analysis was used to study the effects on planar springs in different circumstances and validate theoretical calculations. The designed planar spring was found to undergo displacement on either side of its axis without rotational motion, reducing stresses and wear in the system.

DESIGN INVESTIGATION OF PLANAR SPRING FOR FREE PISTON STIRLING ENGINE

Introduction
Increasing and unparalleled demands of energy throughout the world; continuous depletion of fossil fuels has raised an alarming situation through out the world, this scenario has focused attention to development of alternate energy sources and devices that are able to harness other sources of energy in more efficient ways. Stirling energy is one such device that is capable of transforming and harnessing ther- mal energy for performing work.

Experimental Models

Discussion & Conclusion

Considering the application of Stirling engine the most important as- pects to be taken into account are: Spring design Predictable spring rate (preferably constant spring rate) Infinite fatigue life of the spring Ease of manufacture The use of planar spring widens the application of free-piston Stirling engine, which would otherwise have not been possible due to the bulky size of construction of the engine. In simple words planar spring helps reduce the size of the free-piston type Stirling engine increasing its scope of application.

Aims

To investigate various designs of planar spring for free-piston Stirling engine. Summarize the research done on Stirling engine. Develop a Planar spring for free-piston Stirling engine with frequency between 50Hz to 60Hz, using 3D modelling and simulation software. Mention commercial aspect of the project.

Objectives
Investigate the history of Stirling engine. Study previous research on Stirling engine and highlight the progress of the years. Significance various types of free-piston Stirling engine. Highlight advantages and disadvantages for a planar spring. Model a Planar spring using 3D modelling software. Analyse the various modelled spring under different conditions and constrains.

Conclusion:
Finite element analysis method can be used to study the effects on pla- nar spring under various circumstances but like any other system it not failure proof and the findings should be cross checked with theoretical calculations. The planar spring has a great advantage over the conventional spring due to its ability to undergo displacement on either side of the horizontal central axis; the designed planar spring does not undergo rotational mo- tion like the spider spring thus reducing the stresses (torsional) on the spring thus reducing wear and tear in the system.
