Customer Facing Websites
Organisations create websites for customers to look at. There are three main reasons why organisations create these websites:
Marketing:
To advertise their organisation
Business information
To provide customers with information about the business
Marketing
This website is advertising the latest special offers at Asda to persuade customers to shop at Asda
There is a catalogue showing all of the products for different categories e.g. Golf bags
Business Information
The companys mission is stated There is information about the company share price
There is information about the company results e.g. how much profit they are making
Todays Lesson
You must understand the uses of internal websites (websites for staff in organisations) including: Intranets Information repositories Training facilities
Intranets
Offers the same services as the wider internet, but it is only available in one organisation Users may need to login to access material
Information Repositories
This is like a library where information can be stored and accessed by people People can search within the repository There may be different categories so information is easier to find E.g. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4017501
Training Facilities
Many organisations train their staff by asking them to complete courses online Staff can login and then complete the course at their own pace The organisation can see which staff have completed different training courses It is cheaper to train staff in this way rather than send them on external training courses E.g. http://www.ox.ac.uk/staff/working_at_oxford/training_developmen t/index.html http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/ppd/
