LECTURER
Upon completing of this subject, students should be able to:
• Recall the relevant chemistry principle studied
• Explain verbally and in writing the different chemical
reactions, the differences in the reactivity of various
elements, the nature of various chemical properties
and chemical reactions and the factors affecting
chemical properties and chemical reactions
• Solve chemistry related problem by applying the
relevant chemical principles
• Demonstrate the relevant chemistry laboratory skills
• Apply the various chemical principles learned to
discuss the solution for relevant mechanical
engineering problems.
Synopsis
This subject will discuss the Classification of matter
and scientific representation; Atoms, molecules and
ions; Reactions and its representation; Periodic Table
and the electronic structure of atoms; Chemical
bonding; Properties of matter and Thermo-chemistry. It
will involve the development of scientific experimental
skills in students and illustrate the industrial application
of the chemical principles discussed.
Practical Application
There are 6 practical and 6 tutorials sessions
throughout this subject.
The objectives of each the laboratory sessions are to:
Session 1 Familiarise with laboratory procedures and
equipments
Session 2 Perform volumetric measurement and
determine its accuracy
Session 3 Determine the density of liquid and solid
Session 4 Prepare and standardise chemical solution
Session 5 Perform the analysis of vinegar
Session 6 Explore the Pressure-Volume relationship in
gasses
