What comes to your mind if you think of a traffic light? Or a happy gram? Or a dove? Or the bread and wine? How and why did you connect certain ideas or people with these objects? Can signs represent a reality that is invisible? What happens when we ignore signs?

Is God communicating to us through these symbols?

In what way? Give examples.

What are the signs that tell you how much God loves you? Why do I think that they are signs of Gods love for me? Why do we use signs and symbols? Who is the perfect sign/symbol of Gods love for us?

BAPTISM
Baptism is the foundation of Christian life. It welcomes us to the Church, and makes us belong to the family of God. It is the first step toward becoming a member of the Church. It is the first sacrament we receive to become Christians. It is so important that without it, we would be unable to celebrate other sacraments.

Our Christian life begins when we receive the Sacrament of Baptism.

Jesus instituted the sacrament of Baptism. He wanted everyone to learn about his life and follow his teachings, so he commanded his apostles to Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. . . (Matthew 28:19) During Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave strength to the apostles in carrying out this mission to welcome everyone into the Church.

BAPTISM

BAPTISM
Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we become members of the Church, the family of God. We become children of God, and all other baptized members are our brothers and sisters. We call ourselves Christians followers and friends of Christ.

BAPTISM
We receive the new life in Christ. (GRACE) Original sin is forgiven. We are able to follow God more faithfully.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Priest: My dear children, at Baptism, Gods gift of faith was for most of us accepted by our parents and godparents. Today, as we light our candles from the Paschal candle which is the symbol of the Risen Lord, we will promise once again our faith in Him, in His Church and in what the Church teaches. Parents and friends, let us join our First Communicants in the renewal of the promise we made in Baptism.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Priest: Do you promise to try to avoid sin and wrong doing? All: I do. Priest: Do you promise to stay away from anything or anyone that might lead you to sin or to do something wrong? All: I do.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Priest: Do you believe that God is our Father and that He gives us life? All: I do believe. Priest: Do you believe that Jesus is our Brother and that He died and rose again to bring us new life? All: I do believe.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Priest: Do you believe that all who believe in Christ form one Christian family, the Church? All: I do believe. Priest: Do you believe that we all share the life of Jesus through the Holy Spirit and that one day we will share the fullness of His life in heaven? All: I do believe.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Priest: May the ever-loving God bless you and help you to keep these promises faithfully throughout your life. All: With the help of the Holy Spirit, we promise to always walk as children of light, to keep the flame of faith alive in our hearts and in our daily lives. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Think-Pair-Share
With your partner, discuss the following questions: 1. What is common to the following person:

2. Why do you think they need that common thing in their life?

We are enriched with a special strength through the Holy Spirit

Confirmation, a sacrament of initiation, establishes young adults as full-fledged members of the faith. The faith given in Baptism is now confirmed and made strong through the Holy Spirit.

During your Baptism, your parents and godparents make promises to renounce Satan and believe in God and the Church on your behalf. At Confirmation, you renew those same promises, this time speaking for yourself.

Why do we need to be strengthened?

The Mission of Jesus: Our Mission Too

Just as the Holy Spirit strengthened and guided Jesus in his mission, the Holy Spirit does the same for us during our Baptism. Jesus had three main roles during his ministry.

Jesus as Priest (Mediator)

As priest, Jesus mediates between men and God. Moreover, He offered an important sacrifice to cleanse us of sin He offered His own life.

Jesus as Prophet (Messenger)

As prophet, Jesus delivers Gods word through His teachings. Jesus is the perfect prophet, because He is the Word made Flesh. He also taught people about Gods love through parables and prayers.

Jesus as King (Leader)

As king, though he was the Son of God, he sacrificed for and served his friends and disciples before he thinks of his own need. He is the perfect model of servant leadership.

Sacraments of Initiation
In Baptism, we are welcomed into God s family, the Church. As members of the Church, we are called to live as Jesus did. When we share his roles (priestly, prophetic, and kingly), we fulfill this mission. In Confirmation, our membership in the Church is strengthened, and through the Holy Spirit, we are inspired to share more fully these roles.

How can we share in these three roles of Jesus Christ?

GOD

-Jesus is the sacrament of God to the Church. - the Church is the sacrament of Jesus to us. - the Church gives us the 7 sacraments.
