STEM School Board Presentation

The STEM Academy at Essex High School allows students to explore STEM subjects through project-based learning. It includes requirements like completing an electronic portfolio and internship. Students are grouped into advisories focused on areas like medicine, engineering, and computer science where they work on hands-on projects. For example, the medical advisory is using a 3D printer to build prosthetic hands for recipients. The goal is to provide personalized learning experiences to help students' college applications and potential careers in STEM fields.

Life Sciences Advisory

Students completed an inquiry activity in
which they tested local water samples for the
presence of coliform bacteria.

This activity demonstrated the importance of

using controls during experimentation and
why water quality testing is important

Future Plans

electrophoresis

Design a bat cave with ideal conditions for hibernating bats

without contamination by white nose fungus

We recently became the Vermont champion in the Samsung

Solve for Tomorrow contest

Engineering Advisory
Our first project was to introduce the Design
Process through building paper rockets. Our
compressed air cannon can launch paper rockets
more than a tenth of a mile.

Currently learning Rhino to design 3D printed parts

Computer Science/Math
Learning about microcontrollers and programming with the Arduino using
the SparkFun Inventors Kit 15 circuits designed to unleash a students
