Techniques and Processes

By:
Junard C. Roma

WHAT IS PRINTMAKING?
-is an art of transferring printed images
from a surface

WHAT IS A PRINT?
-is a hand-produced picture that has
been transferred from a printing surface
to a paper

-The number of prints are limited by the

artist and are called edition.

Example:
100/1000
Meaning: This is the 100th copy in an edition
of 1000

Three Broad Categories of Printmaking

Relief Printing
Intaglio
Planographic process

Other Types of Printing

* Collagraphy
* Viscosity Printing

A. Relief Printing
Created by printing the surface of an object,
by inking the surface and impressing it on
paper or cloth
Created by rubbing the paper over the
textured object using crayons or pastel

Examples:
Woodcut Printing
Wood Engraving
Rubber Stamps
Linoleum Cut

1.Woodcut / Woodblock Printing

-earliest form of relief printing
-process of creating an image that uses
wooden block where the lines are
carved out of the wood. The non-image
areas are called negatives.

2. Wood Engraving
-similar to woodblock printing however
it uses the endgrain on blocks of the
hard wood
-can produce many prints before it
deteriorates which make it ideal for
printing illustrations

3. Linoleum or Rubbercut Printing

- print is produced by carving out certain
areas of a drawing in a linoleum or
rubber sheet

B. INTAGLIO PRINTING
-refers to a print making process in
which ink is transferred from the
grooves of a metal plate to paper by
extreme pressure
- example: wedding invitation with raised
text

1. ETCHING
-removal of the surface of a plate by
exposing to an acid bath. A wax coating
or ground that resist acid is applied first,
the printmaker draws on the ground by
cutting it. The play is then placed in a tray
of acid that bites in any place where the
ground is removed forming the design.

2. Engraving
-oldest form of intaglio
- Burins or any sharp instruments can
leave depressions or marks on the metal
can be used to make a metal to reproduce
prints.
Nicolas Bagay, Francisco Suzarez - 12
engraved artworks called Indio Tagalo
Line engraving- most difficult and most
demanding

3. Aquatints
- are tonal areas made by applying
powdered resin to a plate then heated
to produce dots. Each dot resists acid
like in etching

4. Dry Point
Surface of the metal plate is scratched
with a needle, the dry point leaves a
ridge called burr on either side of the
plate resulting to a blurry line

C. Planographic Process
-artist prints from a plane surface
unlike in the intaglio and relief printing

1. Lithography
-is a printmaking technique based
on the principle that water and oil do
not mix. Ink is applied to a piece of
paper from a specially prepared stone

2. Silkscreen or Serigraph
Most popular stenciling process and
newest inexpensive printmaking
Silk screen is made from a finely meshed
silk fabric mounted on a wooden frame.
The non-image areas are blocked by a
variety of method including glue or paper.
The stencil is placed in a frame and inked
using a rubber instrument called
squeegee.

3. Stencil
-is a method of printing that involves
stamping ink through the cutout part of
the master paper to make printed
copies.
