Definition
Means engagement or a mutual promise to

Betrothal is not a legal contract. It does not
make the parties husband and wife; they are
merely affianced.
It is allowed for the parties to repudiate the
agreement, with a good and valid reason
It is usually practice according to the custom of
the people and is regarded as a preliminary step
towards marriage. Any customary practice of
betrothal which are not contrary to Islamic
principle could be accepted.
