The document discusses different types of protections for generators, transformers and motors.

Stator, rotor and miscellaneous protections for generators are discussed.

Faults in auxiliary equipment, oil leakage, insulation failures and different relay types for transformer protection are discussed.

Protection of small motors

Low voltage induction motors
Small motors having an output of a few
tens of H.P and rated up to 415 volts can
be protected by:
Starters, having in built thermal overload
relay & no-volt release facility, & very often
protection for short circuit can be provide
by switch fuse (HRC) units.
Voltage operated single phasing preventors
are popular now.

Protection of large motors

Three pahse induction motors
Ranging from 100 h.p to 5000 h.p or
more
Voltage range 3.3 kv, 6.6 kv.
Used in industries such as fertilizers,
chemical & petrochemical industries.
This motor are controlled by circuit
breaker & associated protective
relays.

Overload & Stalling

Thermal relay for overload :Refer
chapter 2.
Stalling: heavy load thrown on motor
abruptly
Locked rotor
Speed wiil be very small or must
often zero
Motor will draw high current.
Protective scheme: definite time over
current relay

Short circuit
Due to phase fault in motor windings
because of insulation failure
Blocking of rotor because of heavy
load at starting or due to bearing
failure or gear jamming
Instantaneous over current relay can
be used

Unbalanced loading
Negative phase sequence relay
Definite time over current relay
