STUDIES AT UNIVERSITY OF

SANTO TOMAS


In April 1877 Rizal enrolled at the University of Santo

Tomas for a degree in Philosophy and Letters. He was only


16 years old.

After his 1st year of that course he decided to take up


Medicine course.

In the same school year (1877-1878) he also studied


Surveying and Agriculture in Ateneo.

At the age of 17 years old he passed his final examination


in the surveying course.

He was more loyal to the Jesuit teachers.


In 1880 he also had his 1st experience of Spanish

arrogance and brutality.


He joined literary contest sponsored by the Liceo
Artistico Literario de Manila.
His entry poem A La Juventud Filipina (To the
Filipino Youth). He won the top prize of feathershaped pen with gold ribbon.
The following year Rizal won first prize again for
his play El Consejo de Dioses (The Council of the
Gods)

He wrote Junto al Pasig for his one act play during his
time as President of the Academy of Spanish literature
of Ateneo Municipal College de Manila.

The academic climate at UST was quite different from


Ateneo de Manila.

Rizal had an ample time for love, he was also a romantic


dreamer who liked to sip the Nectar of Love.

After losing Segunda Katigbak, he paid court to a young


woman in Calamba.

He simply called her Miss L describing her fair with


seductive and attractive eyes.

During his sophomore year at the UST he courted

Leonor Valenzuela. A tall girl with a regal bearing also a


medicine students from Calamba.

He sent her love notes written in invisible ink. Her pet


name Orang.

Rizals next romance was with another Leonor-Leonor


Rivera his cousin from Camiling

Leonor Rivera was

a frail pretty girl tender as a


budding flower with kindly, wishful eyes.

Leonor signed her name as Taimis


After five years at the UST, he decided to quit and
continued his medical education in Spain.

EDUCATION AT UNIVERSIDAD
CENTRAL DE MADRID, SPAIN

After finishing the fourth year of his medical course at


the UST, Rizal was so disgusted with the method of
instructions of the Domican Professor.

He predict

that his decision to study abroad would not


be favored by his Parents.

Aside from studying, Rizal had a secret mission.


His departure for Spain was kept secret.

Only Paciano, his uncle, his sisters Neneng and Lucia,


and the Valenzuela family, Pedro Paterno, Mateo
Evangelista, the Ateneo Jesuits fathers and some
intimate friends knew about it.

He used the name Jose Mercado.

THESE WERE THE PLACES HE VISITED ON HIS WAY TO


SPAIN
1. May 3, 1882-He departed on board the Spanish steamer Salvadora bound for
Singapore.

2. May 9, 1882-The Salvadora docked in Singapore.


3. May 11,1882-He boarded the ship Djemnah, a French steamer bound for
Europe.

4. May 17,1882-The Djemnah reached Point Galle, a seacoast town in southern


Ceylon.

5. May 18,1882-Rizal landed in order to see the interesting sights.


6. June 11,1882-He reached Naples , he was he was fascinated by the mount
Vesuvius, the Castle of St. Telmo and other historic sights

7. June 12, 1882-The steamer docked at the French harbor of Marseilles.


8. June 15,1882-He left Marseilles to proceed to Spain via train.
9. June 16,1882-He reached Barcelona, Spain by rail. He wrote nationalistic essay
Amor Patrio. 1st written article in soil Spanish.

10.November 3,1882-He enrolled at the Universidad Central de Madrid.

He took up two courses at the Universidad Central de


Madrid namely Medicine and Philosophy of letters.

He also studied painting and


Fine Arts in San Fernando.

He also took lessons in French, German, and English


under private instructors and assiduously practiced
fencing and shooting at the Hall of Arms of Sanz y
Carbonnel.

He lived a simple life in Madrid intent on studying and


preparing himself for the service of his Fatherland.

He was deeply affected by Beecher Stowes Uncle


Toms Cabin and Eugene Sues The Wandering Jew.
These two books aroused his sympathy for the
oppressed and unfortunate people.

Rizal was attracted to Consuelo Ortiga y Perez. The

daughter of Don Pablo Ortiga y Rey, former city mayor


of Manila.

August 22,1883 he composed a lovely poem, entitled A


La Senorita C.O.yP. (To Miss C.O.yP )

Before his romance to Consuelo he backed out because


he was still engage to Leonor Rivera.

1883, he joined the Masonic Lodge Acacia in Madrid.


His Masonic name was Dimansalang.
At the National Exposition of Fines Arts in Madrid in

1884 two Filipinos won outstanding honor for their


country. Juan Luna canvas Spolarium won 1st prize a
gold medal , while Felix Resurrection Hidalgos Christian
Virgin Exposed to the Populace was awarded second
prize a silver medal.

Rizal was invited to give the principal speech.


Rizal participated in the bloody students riots that
erupted at Central University.

Dr. Miguel Moraytas proclamation of freedom of


Science and the Teacher.

In June 1884 he was

awarded the degree of Licentiate


in Medicine but he has not awarded the Doctoral
Diploma.

He was

awarded the degree of Licentiate Philosophy


and Letters on June 19,1885 his 24th birthday.

He qualified to be a professor in Humanities in any


Spanish University.

He became a qualified became a full-pledge physician


and qualified to practice Medicine.
