What is diabetes?
Diabetes Mellitus (sugar
diabetes) is a disease
characterized by high levels of
sugar (glucose) in the blood
Occurs when the pancreas does
not produce enough insulin

When things work correctly

Two types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes
Was

previously called insulindependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)


or juvenile-onset.
Develops when the bodys immune
system
attacks pancreatic beta cells.
Usually strikes children and young
adults, although disease onset can
occur at any age.

Type 2 Diabetes
Previously

called Non-InsulinDependent DM (NIDDM) or adultonset.


Due to a combination of
ineffective insulin and/or a
lack of insulin production.
It used to be seen in only adults
but is now seen in youth

Diabetes affects approximately 150 million

people (worlwide)
8.3% (12.5 million) of the Malaysia population
DIAGNOSED: 6.79 million people
UNDIAGNOSED: 5.71 million people
Nearly 50% of people with diabetes do
not know they have it!

Women: 12.8% or 1.6 million of all
women aged 20 years or older have
diabetes.

insulin production and prevent blood
sugar absorption.
