Fischer projection formula

Two-dimensional structure of chiral molecule

Vertical lines: bonds going into the page
Horizontal lines: bonds coming out of the page
The most oxidized group should place at the top.

“Sawhorse” projection
Vertical line: bonds
going into the page

Horizontal lines: bonds Carbon

coming out of the page

The intersection of vertical and horizontal lines

represents a carbon atom, usually one that is a
stereogenic center.
Increasing oxidation state
C=O on carbon-2 increases
the priority of C-OH

CH3 CH2 OH CH OH CHO COOH

C O O O
C C
H OH

increasing oxidation state

In the Fisher projection the main chain is oriented

with the most highly oxidized group at the top.
Allowed motion for Fischer projection
1. 180° rotation (not 90° or 270°):

180°

Both are same because,

–COOH and –CH3 go into plane of paper in both
projections
–H and –OH come out of plane of paper in both
projections

Rotation by 180o in the plane

No other angle of rotation
of the paper does not change
is allowed.
the molecule.
2. 90° rotation

90°

Not same because,

–COOH and –CH3 go into plane of paper in one
projection but come out of plane of paper in
other projection.
These two compounds are enantiomers
2. One group hold steady and the other three can
be rotated either clockwise or counter clockwise:

Same as

R-lactic acid R-lactic acid
