A mainframe computer is a large, high-speed computer that supports numerous workstations and is the primary memory of a computer. Mainframes are large arrays of computers used by corporations to process massive amounts of data, usually filling an entire room. They have characteristics like virtual storage, multiprocessing, spooling, batch processing, time sharing, high capacity, scalability, integrity and security, availability, access to large data sets, system management, and autonomic capabilities. Mainframes have been used since the 1950s and are still used today for processing large corporate data.
