Partition the Hard Disk

The basics of hard drive partitioning
Partitions divide available space of a hard drive into
smaller portions
Primary partition
Continuous range of cylinders assigned to a particular
operating system

Extended partitions
Continuous ranges of disk cylinders, but can be
subdivided into logical partitions

Logical partitions
Do not require entries in the main partition table
Advanced SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Administration (Course 3038)

11

Partition the Hard Disk (continued)

The basics Linux partition scheme
SLES 9 needs at least two partitions
Swap partition
Root partition

Root partition size guidelines

500 MB for a minimal installation
700 MB for an installation with minimal graphical
interface
1.5 GB for a default installation proposed by YaST
2.5 GB for a full installation
Advanced SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Administration (Course 3038)

12

Partition the Hard Disk (continued)

Partitioning schemes for different server types
File server
Creates extra partition with enough space for the data

Web server
Creates an extra partition for the Web space hosted

Compute server
Uses more than one swap partition
Distributes swap partitions to multiple hard disks

Desktop workstation
Creates a separate partition for users home directories

Create new partitions

You are asked to select a disk for the new partition first
You are asked if you want to create a primary or an extended
partition
You are asked if you want to create a primary or a logical
partition
If you have three primary partitions and an extended
partition, you can only create logical partitions

How to use YaST Expert Partitioner (continued)
Manage EVMS (enterprise volume management)
volumes
EVMS is a similar approach to LVM
YaSTs configuration tools are not as developed for
EVMS as they are for LVM
Logical volume groups are called containers in EVMS
In 2008 Novell announced that the company would be
moving from EVMS to LVM in future editions of their
SUSE products, while continuing to fully support
customers using EVMS.
