Project ManagementTechniques

Project management techniques include work breakdown structures (WBS), Gantt charts, and PERT/CPM. A WBS breaks a project into tasks and deliverables. Gantt charts show task timing and dependencies using bars, while PERT/CPM identifies the critical path of tasks that determine the project duration. These tools help planners schedule projects, monitor progress, and ensure tasks are completed on time.

Project Management

Techniques
Topic Two

1
Project Management Techniques
Good project management deals with three
factors : Time, cost and performance. In order to
bring the many components of a large project
into control there is a large toolkit of techniques,
methodologies and tools. These techniques
provide the tools for managing different
components involved in a project, However the
success of a project will always rest on the
abilities of a project manager and the team
members.

2
Tools and Techniques to be covered
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Gantt Charts
PERT/CPM

3
Work Breakdown Structure
This tool is related to planning and
scheduling a project, basically it is a
functional decomposition of the tasks of a
project.
It should be product or task oriented and
should include all necessary efforts which
must be undertaken to achieve the end
objective.

4
Work Breakdown Structure cont.
Disadvantage:
It does not show the timing of activities.

In order to overcome this drawback another

tool can be used.

6
Gantt Charts
Gantt Charts are important tools that help you
plan and manage complex projects.
They help you work out the order in which tasks
need to be carried out; allow you to identify the
resources needed to complete the project, along
with the times when these resources will be
needed; help you work out the quickest possible
time in which a project can be completed; and
help you identify the "critical path" for a project.

7
Gantt Charts
This is the sequence of tasks that must be
completed on time if you are to complete the
project by a particular date.
When a project is under way, Gantt Charts help
you to monitor whether the project is on
schedule. If it is not, they help you to pinpoint the
remedial action necessary to put it back on
schedule.
These are all essential activities if you are going
to manage projects successfully.

8
Gantt Charts
Gantt charts help you to:
Access how long a project should take.
Helps manage the dependencies between
tasks.
Determine the resources needed.

9
Gantt Charts
Gantt charts show task and schedule
information. The tasks are usually
numbered and listed vertically. A bar
shows the starting date and projected
completion date of each task. Color or
shading is sometimes used to show how
much of each task has been completed. A
Gantt chart is a management tool and a
communications tool.

11
PERT/CPM
Critical Path Method and PERT are powerful
tools that help you to schedule and manage
complex projects
Critical Path Method (CPM) helps you to plan all
tasks that must be completed as part of a
project. They act as the basis both for
preparation of a schedule, and of resource
planning. During management of a project, they
allow you to monitor achievement of project
goals. They help you to see where remedial
action needs to be taken to get a project back on
course.

12
PERT/CPM
The benefit of using CPM over Gantt
Charts is that Critical Path Method
formally identifies tasks which must be
completed on time for the whole project to
be completed on time, and also identifies
which tasks can be delayed for a while if
resource needs to be reallocated to catch
up on missed tasks.

13
PERT/CPM
A further benefit of Critical Path Analysis is
that it helps you to identify the minimum
length of time needed to complete a
project. Where you need to run an
accelerated project, it helps you to identify
which project steps you should accelerate
to complete the project within the available
time. This helps you to minimize cost while
still achieving your objective.
14
PERT/CPM
The disadvantage of CPM is that the
relation of tasks to time is not as
immediately obvious as with Gantt Charts.
This can make them more difficult to
understand for someone who is not
familiar with the technique.

15
Steps in PERT planning process
1. Identify the specific activities.
2. Determine the proper sequence of the
activities.
3. Construct a network diagram.
4. Estimate the time required for each
activity.
5. Determine the critical path.
6. Update the PERT chart as the project
progresses.
