The Aryans brought with them their
religion, Vedism, with its worship of:
Indra- warrior of god thunder
Varuna- the god of the sky
Surya- the god of the sun
Agni- the god of fire

Their literature is embodied
in the Vedas, the earliest of
which was the Rig-Veda,
containing hymns to their
nature gods, to whom they
offered gifts and sacrifices.
The Caste System
oBrahmans- the highest caste
consisting of educated priests and
scholars who directed the religious
life of the community and supplied
the rulers.
oKshatriyas- the warrior class which,
with the Brahmans, constituted the
ruling class.
Pariah or Untouchables
oVaisyas- the class of merchants and
farmers

Evolution of Vedism to Buddhism or
Brahmanism.
The main religious text is the Upanishads
written in Sanskrit.
Brahma is the cosmic principle, with
atman (breath) as its counterpart in man.
Two principal doctrines are samsara, the
transmigration of souls, and karma, the
law that the actions of a man in one life
will determine his future rebirths.
