Microwave Engineering: Lecture # 6

This document summarizes key topics from Lecture 6 of Microwave Engineering: Plane wave reflection from different media interfaces is analyzed, including for general mediums, lossless mediums, good conductors, and perfect conductors. Oblique incidence at a dielectric interface is also examined for parallel polarization. The analysis derives expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients under each condition. Poynting's theorem relating electromagnetic energy flow to power dissipation and energy storage is also reviewed.

Plane Wave Reflection From a Media
Interface:
 A number of problems to be considered involve the behavior of electromagnetic fields
at the interface of various types of media, including lossless media, lossy media, a
good conductor, or a perfect conductor,
 and so it is beneficial at this time to study the reflection of a plane wave normally
incident from free-space onto a half-space of an arbitrary material.

 The geometry is shown in Figure, where

the material half-space z > 0 is
characterized by the parameters 𝝐, µ,
and σ.

Plane Wave Reflection From a Media
Interface: General Medium
 We can assume that the incident
plane wave has an electric field
vector oriented along the x-axis
and is propagating along the
positive z-axis. The incident
 The fields can then be written, for z
< 0, as

Plane Wave Reflection From a Media
Interface: Good Conductor
 Notice that 𝑆ҧ + , the power density in the lossy
conductor, decays exponentially according to
the 𝑒 −2αz attenuation factor.
 This means that power is being dissipated in
the lossy material as the wave propagates
into the medium in the +z direction.
