ELECTRICIANS TOOL AND EQUIPMENT
 INTRODUCTION
An electrician needs to have the right tools
to do the job
properly.
Tool requirement vary with the job, meaning
that sometimes
need only minimum of tools, or others
require some rather
complicated devices.
Tool is divided into 2:
1) Hands tools
2) Power tools
Tools Basics: A Review
Terms and  Tool – is an object designed to do a
definition
specific kind of work such as
cutting or fitting by directing
manually applied force ( called as
hands tools) or by means of a
motor (called power tools)
 Instrument – is a tool or mechanical
device, especially one used for
precision work in science, medicine
or technology
Tools Basics: A Review
Terms and  Device – a tool or machine designed
definition
to perform a particular task or function
 Equipment – as necessary items e.g.
the tools, clothing or other items
needed for a particular activity or
purpose
 Appliances – an electrical device or
machine that is used for a specific
purpose in the home, e.g. vacuum
cleaner or washing machine,
domestic electrical machine

Hands Tools Basics: Pliers
Pliers

PLIERS
Long nose
pliers
1. Long nose pliers come in different
sizes and shapes.
2. It is uses to :
- to grip items from small areas
where fingers or hands can’t
reach
- bend or shape wire
- cut wire
- strip protective coating from
electrical wire
PLIERS
Combination
pliers
1. Combination pliers come in different
sizes and shapes.
2. Typical uses
-Cutting
- Bending/Straightening
- Cutting metal-clad (MC) cable
- Gripping
- Strip protective coating from
electrical wire
PLIERS
Side cutting
pliers 1. Side cutting pliers also called lineman's
pliers come in a great variety of types
and sizes, each designed for a
particular job
2. The most useful sizes are 6" and 8"
3. Typical uses
- gripping
- wire splicing
- wire cutting
- insulation stripping
- (by using the heel) for crushing
insulation
Hands Tools Basics:
Screwdrivers
Screwdrivers
1. Screwdrivers come in various
 Convention
al straight
sizes and with several tip
shank shapes.
 Phillips
2. For safe and efficient use
 Stub or
close
screwdriver tips should be
quarter kept square and sharp.
 Screwdriver
bit
3. In selecting a screwdriver for
a particular job the width of
screwdriver tip should match
the width of the screwdriver
slot.
Adhere To Safety Factors
 A screwdriver tip should be of such shape
Screwdrivers and size as to fit the screw slot snugly
 A screwdriver tip of the wrong shape and
size may also cause the tool to slip out of
the screw slot and damage the work or
some vital piece of equipment near by
 When a screwdriver is used it must be kept
in line with the axis of the screw and
centered in the slot.
 When using a screwdriver keep your hands
behind the tip of the blade. It is a dangerous
practice to place one hand behind the work
to support it while the screwdriver is held
and used in the other hand.
SCREWDRIVERS
Shank
screwdriver
1. Shank screw driver also called flat head
(flat head) come in a great variety of types and
sizes, each designed for a particular
job
2. The most useful sizes are 6" and 8"
3. Typical uses
- to loosen
- to tighten flat head type screws
SCREWDRIVERS
Phillips
screwdriver 1. The Phillips screw must be driven
with a screwdriver having a specially
shaped tip. The most useful sizes are 6"
and 8"
2. The tips of these screwdrivers are
sized by numbers
3. The #1 tip is used for #4 screws or
smaller. The #2 tip is used for #5 to
#9 screws. The #3 tip is used for #10
to #16 screws. The #4 tip is used for
#18 and larger screws.
Hands Tools Basics: Drilling
Equipment
Drilling Drills
Equipment
 Drilling equipment is needed to make holes in building
 Power drill structures for passage of conduit and wire in both new
 Ratchet and old constructions.
brace  Drilling provides greater accuracy and a wider
variety of sizes of holes.
 Bit and drill
 If the machine is operated by hand, with hand
pressure, it is called a hand. therefore it is generally
used only for light, small work
 If operated by hand but with pressure applied by
plating it at the chest and using the weight of the
body for pressure, it is called a breast drill.
 Power drills are run by electricity. Such power drills
relieve the mechanic of effort and make it possible to
do more accurate work.
DRILLS
Portable Power
Drill 1. Portable electric drills are made in a
great many different types
2. They may be classified as light-duty
and heavy-duty drills
3. Light drills take points up to 1/4" in
diameter and generally have a pistol
grip. Heavy drills take points up to 1",
are quite heavy.
4. Better light drills and most heavy drills
have the chuck that must be tightened
with a key. This kind is best and safest
because it allows for a tight grip on the
drill point.
DRILLS
Ratchet Brace
Drill
1. Ratchet brace Drill is operated by
hand, with hand pressure, it is called
a hand drill.
2. Light drills take points up to 1/4" in
diameter and generally have a pistol
grip.
3. It may uses as cutting holes into thin
