Pre-reading activities…

get them to READ!

Dimitra Tsolakidou
5o epal Heraklion
The pre-reading stage:
• Prepares students for what is to come
• Gives them a purpose to read on
• Creates motivation
• Activates the relevant content schemata
• Releases text anxiety and stress
• Contributes greatly to reading
comprehension
• Influences the success (or not) of the
reading lesson
In practice: What can you do
before the actual reading?

Surprise!
Prediction:

If you saw a title written on board saying

‘Welcome to paradise’ what would you
think the text would be about?
Realia (i.e. post cards, photographs)
Show them a map!
Use a sentence from the text:
‘It is no coincidence that the most
cosmopolitan of all Greek islands attracts
so many visitors from the entire globe…’ or
‘join the crowds on beaches, in bars and
restaurants, feeling the cosmopolitan air
the island sends out all around you’

Q: can you guess the island?

Give them a motive…

Question posed / quiz :

how many people in the world, according

to your opinion, speak English as a foreign
language?
Show them a video
Create the context
• Give the first sentence of the text and ask
students to continue and give their
suggestions / opinions…

‘When most Greek parents receive bad

school reports for their children, their usual
reaction is….’
School Report

death

Give them a song!
If you tolerate this… (lyrics)
• The future teaches you to be • Gravity keeps my head down
alone Or is it maybe shame
The present to be afraid and cold At being so young and being so
So if I can shoot rabbits vain
Then I can shoot fascists Holes in your head today
Bullets for your brain today But I'm a pacifist
But we'll forget it all again I've walked La Ramblas
Monuments put from pen to paper But not with real intent
Turns me into a gutless wonder And if you tolerate this
And if you tolerate this Then your children will be next
Then your children will be next And if you tolerate this
And if you tolerate this Then your children will be next
Then your children will be next Will be next
Will be next Will be next
Will be next Will be next
Will be next Will be next
For the pre-reading stage…give them
something to read
If that was the pre-reading
stage… what do you expect to
follow?
In case you are wondering… this is the actual
reading text!
There is more to ‘pre-reading’ that
meets the eye…
• Story grid (5 words to invent a story)
• Definitions of words (i.e. peace, culture)
• Diagrams (i.e. tree diagrams)
• Witty quotes (‘mistakes are the portals of
discovery’)
• Miming
• Opposites (pollution, traffic)
So don’t repeat yourselves and keep
your options open…

any material could be a potential

pre – reading activity!
thank you!
