Non-modal Be, have, do, does, did,etc.

1. Can
Function: Example
 Ability The Professor can speak more than 5 languages.
NB:
Can = be able to, be capable of, know how to

 Permission Can I go home early?


NB:
Can = be allowed to/be permitted to/May (formal)

 Theoretical possibility Anybody can make mistakes

Can is used for present and future time.


2. Could
Function: Example
 Past ability I could swim when I was ten.
Past time

 Present or Future permission Could you repeat once again?

 Ability in unreal condition I could pick you up if you already phoned me.

Could is used for past, present, and future time with different purpose.
3. May
Function: Example
 Permission You may smoke here.
NB;
May = Can (less formal)

Possibility (factual) The road may be blocked.

May is used for present and future time.


4. Might
Function Example
 Permission Might I come in?
NB:
Might rare functions as a permission.

 Possibility(less certain than may) She might be sick.

 The past form of May She might come yesterday

Might is used for past, present, and future time.


5. Shall
Function: Example
a. Willingness of 2nd and 3rd person Susan shall study hard as she
wants to be a doctor.
Shall = ‘rela/harus’ (Indonesian)

•Intention for 1 st person (I/we) We shall treat the guests well.


I shall watch the movie tonight.
6. Should
Function: Example
• Advice You should study hard.
• Past intention I should come yesterday but it rained.
• Conditional intention 1) We should buy the car if we had a lot of
money.
7. Will
Function Example
• Intention 1) I will send the report as soon as
possible.
2) I will do it, whatever happens.

• Prediction Oil will float on water.


8. Would
Function Example
 Willingness Would you forgive me?

 The past of Will I would come but I was very busy.

 Condition I would come if you invited me.

 Probability That would be nice


9. Must
Function Example
a. Obligation You must study hard in order that you are smart

b. Necessity There must be a mistake.


10. Ought to
Function Example
a. Obligation/Expectation You ought to consume this medicine.
