Astrobiology

Goals and Benefits Application

What is Astrobiology? 3
4

Astrobiology (exobiology or xenobiology) is a multidisciplinary field dealing with the

origin, evolution, nature, existence, and search for extraterrestrial life including future of
life in the universe (life beyond Earth). Astrobiology encompasses areas of biology,
astronomy, and geology.
5
Goals and benefits of Astrobiology
Astrobiology seeks to answer fundamental scientific questions about life: how it
begins and evolves; what biological, planetary, and cosmic conditions must exist in
order for it to take hold; and whether there is/was/can/be life elsewhere in the
galaxy.
Future Prospect of Astrobiology
6

1. Searching the steps that led inanimate 1. The possibility of learning from
materials – rocks, sediments, organic chemicals and minerals on the surface
compounds, water – to come together of planets whether microbes might live
and build living organisms, with there, including beneath the planet’s
replicating genes, cell walls, and the surface
ability to reproduce
2. The likelihood of life existing elsewhere
2. Discovering how proliferation led to based on elements other than carbon
new life forms on Earth and a system different than DNA, and
3. Understanding the arrival of water and whether such life even exist here on
essential organic compounds on planets Earth, but still undetected
and moons, and how they interact with
the planets and moons they land on

Inventory of CO₂ available for terraforming Mars

The ideas:
 Changing Mars’ environment to be more earth like that would allow terrestrial life
(possibly including humans) to survive without the need for life-support systems.
 Mobilizing gases present on Mars today in non-atmospheric reservoirs by emplacing
them into the atmosphere, and increasing the pressure and temperature so that plants
or humans could survive at the surface.
