    OBSERVE NATURE MORE DIRECTLY
    AND SET DOWN ITS MOST FLEETING

    IMPRESSIONISM
    1. IMPRESSIONISTS PAINT QUICKLY IN ORDER TO
    CAPTURE THE “IMPRESSION” OF THE SUBJECT RIGHT
    AT THE MOMENT. AS YOU AN TELL, IMPRESSIONIST
    ARE MUCH MORE INTERESTED IN CONVEYING
    MOOD, AND ATMOSPHERE WITH THEIR PAINTING
    THAN CREATING A DETAILED A LIFELIKE REPLICA OF
    THEIR SUBJECT.

    French artist Claude
    Lorrain’s stylized, ideal
    landscapes influenced
    many later artists,
    particularly English
    landscape painters. His
    Harbor at Sunset,
    painted in 1639, is in the
    Louvre museum in Paris,
    France.
    2. TIME AND MOTION ARE ALSO CONSCIOUS
    ELEMENTS IN THE WORKS OF THE
    IMPRESSIONISTS. THEY CONCENTRATE ON
    PAINTING THE CHANGES IN COLOR AND
    SHAPES CAUSED BY LIGHT AT DIFFERENT TIMES
    OF THE DAY. IN THIS WAY, IMPRESSIONISTS ARE
    KNOWN TO WORK LIKE SCIENTISTS BECAUSE
    THEY WANT TO CATCH THE TRUE EFFECT OF
    DAYLIGHT ON THE OBJECTS.
    3. THEY ALSO PREFER PAINTING OUTDOORS
    BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT THE COLOR OF
    SHADE IS INFLUENCED BY THE SURROUNDING
    COLORS, AND THEREFORE, MUST SHINE AND
    FILTER AND THROUGH THE SCENE AND FLOOD
    ONTO THE OBJECTS IN THE PAINTING.
    EXAMPLE: IN 1876 AND 1877
    FRENCH ARTIST CLAUDE MONET
    PRODUCED A SERIES OF PAINTINGS
    OF THE SAINT-LAZARE RAILWAY
    STATION NEAR HIS APARTMENT IN
    PARIS. LIKE OTHER IMPRESSIONIST
    PAINTERS, MONET OFTEN DEPICTED
    SCENES OF MODERN URBAN LIFE
    LIKE THE STEAM-FILLED RAILWAY
    SHED IN GARE SAINT-LAZARE
    (1877, MUSÉE D'ORSAY, PARIS)
    4. THEY USE OF TINY DABS AND DASHES OF
    BRIGHT COLORS THAT ARE MIXED FROM PURE
    HUES AND BROKEN UP WITH THEIR OPPOSITE
    COLORS SEEM TO BLEND AS YOU LOOK AT
    THEM FROM DISTANCE.

    RENOIR STUDIED PAINTING WITH SEVERAL OTHER PAINTERS
    WHO BECAME KNOWN AS THE IMPRESSIONISTS. RENOIR
    LIKE PAINT LIVELY GROUP OF FIGURES. HE USUALLY USED
    THE MAIDS IN HIS HOUSE AS HIS MODELS. RENOIRS
    PICTURES WERE FULL OF SKETCHY PATCHES OF COLOR
    AND CONTRASTS OF LIGHT AND SHADE. RENOIR PAINTED
    MORE THAN 6000 PAINTINGS. EVEN WHEN HE BECAME
    CRIPPLED IN OLD AGE, HE CARRIED ON PAINTING BY
    WEDGING BRUSHES BETWEEN HIS TWISTED FINGERS.
