Line Defect:
 Also known as dislocation means irregularity in crystal
structure
 One dimensional defect (Linear)
 Line defect also effect the properties of Crystal[1]
 Deviation from ideal arrangement in a row
 Edge dislocation
 Screw dislocation
-
Edge Dislocation
 Extra half plane of atoms
is introduce
 Enough force is applied
from one side of the
crystal causing distortion
in a crystal.
 Extra half plane will
break the bond and form
new bond with its
neighbor.
Edge Dislocation
 In perfect crystal , the
atom are in equilibrium
position.
 In imperfect crystal above
the edge the atoms are
squeezed and are in a state
of compression.
 Below the edge the atoms
are pulled apart and are in
a state of tension.

.
 After removal of half plane
configuration is shown
 Extra half plane, Missing
half plane
 Non-stable configuration
because of twice the
spacing and bond
stretched and hence come
together
 If allow the relaxation the
pattern would be
Edge Dislocation Types:
Positive Edge Dislocation Negative Edge Dislocation
Burger Vector:
 Special type of vector
use to find the direction
and magnitude of
distortion
 .Direction depends
upon the dislocation
line ( Perpendicular to
dislocation line)
 To calculate Burger
vector we draw
rectangular clock wise
circuit
 The burger vector will
be the vector from the
start to end of the
circuit

Screw dislocation
 Also called line defect.

 In screw dislocation the atoms are arranged in a helical

pattern.

 Motion of dislocation is also the result of shear stress.

 Motion is perpendicular to direction of stress.

 Dislocation is a boundary
between slip and unsliped
part.

 Slip direction is parallel to

dislocation line.
Parallel planes
perpendicular to
dislocation line to
form a continuous
spiral ramp.
Right handed screw dislocation
Positive and negative screw
dislocation
 For positive, dislocation line
direction is parallel to burgers
vector.
 BURGER VECTOR IN SCREW DISLOCATION:
 Burger vector is denoted by b.
 Burger vector is always constant.
 Burger vector is always parallel to dislocation line.
