Unit I. Earth and Space: First Quarter (Science 10)

This document outlines a science module on plate tectonics, including defining key terms like epicenter, describing plate boundaries and movement, and an activity to locate the epicenter of an earthquake using triangulation. It provides learning objectives, content on the crust and plates, and review questions to assess understanding of how plate tectonics relates to earthquakes.

UNIT I.

EARTH AND
SPACE
FIRST QUARTER (SCIENCE 10)

PREPARED BY:
APLE M. RIGOR
TEACHER III
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
•LEARNING COMPETENCY:
1. "The Learners should be able to describe
the distribution of active volcanoes,
earthquake epicenters, and major mountain
belts“
• a. Define Plate tectonic and Earthquake
• b. Explain the relation of plates in occurrence of
earthquake
• c. Cite importance of determining the epicenter
of an earthquake.
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

•DESCRIBE WHAT YOU’VE SEEN FROM THE

VIDEOCLIP.
•WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON FOR
THIS MOVEMENT?
•WHAT DO YOU CALLED TO THIS
MOVEMENT?
•HOW DO THESE MOVEMENTS RELATED TO
THE STRUCTURE OF EARTH?
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

“EARTHQUAKE”
IS THE VIBRATION OF
EARTH DUE TO THE
RAPID RELEASE OF
ENERGY
LET US REVIEW!

“USTCR”
DEFINE AS THE OUTERMOST LAYER OF THE EARTH.
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

EARTH’S CRUST
The outermost layer
of the Earth’s
surface
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
EARTH’S CRUST

• Continental Crust
• Continental crust
forms the land (the
continents, as the
name suggests) that
we see today.
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
EARTH’S CRUST
Continental Crust
• Continental crust averages about 35
km thick. Under some mountain
chains, crustal thickness is
approximately twice that thickness
(about 70 km thick).
• Continental crust is less dense and
therefore more buoyant than
oceanic crust
• Continental crust contains some of
the oldest rocks on Earth.
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
EARTH’S CRUST
Oceanic Crust
• As the name already
suggests, this crust is
below the oceans.
• Compared to continental
crust, Oceanic crust is thin
(6-11 km).
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
EARTH’S CRUST
Oceanic Crust
• It is more dense than
continental crust and therefore
when the two types of crust
meet, oceanic crust will sink
underneath continental crust.
• The rocks of the oceanic crust
are very young compared with
most of the rocks of the
continental crust. They are not
older than 200 million years.
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

WHAT IS PLATE TECTONIC?

MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
MAP OF
PLATE
BOUNDARIES
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS
• There are seven relatively
large plates and a number
of smaller ones, including
the Philippine plate. The
plates move very slowly but
constantly, and this
movement is called
tectonics.
• The theory of moving
lithospheric plates is called
plate tectonics.
UNLOCKED THE WORD
• P-waves
• Primary (P) wave the first type of seismic wave to
be recorded in a seismic station
• S-waves
• Secondary (S) wave second type of earthquake
wave to be recorded in a seismic station
• Seismogram
• a record made by a seismograph
• Seismograph
• a device used to record earthquake waves
LETS DO ACTIVITY 1. FIND THE CENTER

Answer 9000 km
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

•How can we relate Plate

tectonic in the occurrence
of Earthquake?
MODULE 1: PLATE TECTONICS

What do you think is the

importance of determining the
epicenter of an earthquake?
LET US SUM IT UP !
• What is plate tectonic
• Plate tectonics a theory which suggests that
Earth’s crust is made up of plates that interact in
various ways,

• How is it related to the occurrence of Earthquake?

• Plates interact in various ways, thus producing
earthquakes, mountains, volcanoes, and other
geologic features
ASSIGNMENT
•Bring the following
•2pcs Plastic cover (cut it into 8.5 x 11inches)
•Marking pens (two different colors)
