Evacuate the area and place caution boards. Wear PPEs and promptly cover any blood spill with absorbent materials like tissue or cloth. Completely cover the spill for 20 minutes with a 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Use forceps or tongs to collect soiled materials and place in a yellow bag without touching by hand. Clean the area with disinfectant and a designated mop before washing hands and filing an incident report to inform ICN.

Blood spill management

• Evacuate the area.


• Place the caution board.
• Wear PPE’s
• Cover the spill promptly with absorbent
material like tissue paper or cotton cloth.
Completely cover the spillage with sodium
hypochlorite solution 1% should be used for
20 min.
• Do not touch the soiled material by hand.
Either use forceps/ tongs from the spill kit.
• Collect all the soiled material with help of tong
to yellow bag.
• Clean the area with disinfectant
• Clean area with mop (use mop that is used to
clean only spills).Clean & dry the mop.
• Wash and dry your hands.
• Fill the incident form.
• Inform ICN.
