Abrasive Water Jet Machining

This document discusses abrasive jet machining (AJM), a nontraditional machining process where a high-velocity stream of abrasive particles erodes material from a workpiece. It provides an overview of the AJM process, including a schematic diagram, key process parameters like the abrasive material and gas used, and applications where AJM is commonly used like cutting hard materials. The document also outlines advantages of AJM like its ability to cut complex shapes without heat, and disadvantages like its low material removal rate and machining accuracy. Finally, it presents some sample questions about AJM that may appear on competitive exams.

Process Parameters
 The process characteristics can be evaluated by
 The MRR,
 The geometry of the cut,
 The roughness of the surface produced, and
 The rate of nozzle wear.

 The major parameters which control these quantities are:

 The abrasive (composition, strength, size and mass flow rate).
 The gas (composition, pressure and velocity).
 The nozzle (geometry, material, distance from and inclination to
the work surface).

Applications
Mostly this method finds application in
cutting hard/brittle material.
 Cutting a slots, thin sections, deburring
etc.
 Cleaning and polishing
Mechanical
1. abrasive jet Advantages
machining(ajm).
1. It can cut any shape of hole in materials of any hardness and brittleness.
2. It can cut fragile and heat sensitive materials without damage as no heat is
generated.
3. Low capital cost.

Disadvantage
1. MRR is low
2. Machining accuracy is poor
3. Additional cleaning of Workpiece required.

Water Jet Machining is another variation where a high pressure jet of water
directed on the surface to be remove material.
Used for: soft material like rubber.
Important questions for competitive exams
1. AJM nozzles are made of
(a) low carbon steel
(b) HSS
(c) WC
(d) Stainless steel

2. Material removal takes place in AJM due to

(a) electrochemical action
(b) mechanical impact
(c) fatigue failure of the material
(d) sparking on impact

3. As the stand off distance increases, the depth of penetration in AJM

(a) increases
(b) decreases
(c) does not change
(d) initially increases and then remains steady

Answers: 1 – (c) 2 – (b) 3– (b)
