    the production and use of manufactured
    objects
    Importance of measuring tools
    1. It is essential for examining a finished
    product or semi-finished product. The
    inspection or examination operations
    include checking, or testing an object
    based on the required dimensions
    given on a diagram or a sketch.

    2. Measurements taken must be


    accurate.
    Different Measuring Tools

    Triangles –
    used for
    drawing
    vertical and
    oblique lines
    Ruler - most popular type of measuring
    tool, usually 6 or 12 inches in length,
    and needed for measuring sizes and
    distances.
     Triangular Scale – used in general drawing,
    main purpose is to reproduce the
    dimension in full size or to reduce or
    enlarge them on a drawing. Scales help the
    drafter keep the proportions accurate.
    Protractor - used
    for measuring and
    setting of angles
    other than those
    obtainable with the
    triangles.

    A protractor is a transparent plastic tool


    designed to measure angles. They are usually
    semicircular but also are available in a full circle
    360° version.

     Origin The small hole near the bottom of the


    protractor is aligned over the vertex of the angle
    to be measured.
     Baseline The line along the bottom of the
    protractor is aligned along one of the angle's legs.
    Note: It is not the edge of the protractor body
    itself, but parallel to it.
     Scales The angle of the other leg is read from one
    of the two scales, whichever is more convenient.
     Tape or Tape Ruler – a concave, spring- steel
    tape blade ranging from ¼ to 1” wide and 6
    to about 300 feet in length, coiled inside a
    carrying case.
     Metric tape ruler comes in comparable widths
    and lengths up to 10 meters.
     It provides an easy means for accurately
    measuring curved surfaces.
     Divider – similar to the compass in
    construction, used for dividing
    distances into a number of equal parts;

     instrument for measuring, transferring,


    or marking off distances, consisting of
    two straight adjustable legs hinged
    together and ending in sharp points. It
    is used principally in drafting for the
    accurate transfer of dimensions from a
    measuring scale

     Group I. Draw vertical and horizontal lines


    using the ruler

     Group II. Draw 30 degrees, 45 degrees and


    90 degrees angles using the triangle

    Group III. Draw circles , concentric circles and


    half circles using the compass.
