Confucianism=
BLUE, takes
over more than
half of China.
Has about 5-6
million
followers.
The Founder

Confucius
 Chinese teacher and philosopher.
 He was the founder of the religion Confucianism.
 He wanted to be a political advisor but was unsuccessful so he
turned to teaching
 Confucius was the most famous – and important – of the early
Chinese thinkers. The Chinese called him Kong Fu Zi or
“Master Kong.”
He was master of the six arts of :
 Ritual, Music, Archery Charioteering, Calligraphy,
Arithmetic

Beliefs
 family and the relationship between parents and
children are the basis of society
 devotion to family comes before the interests of self
 Education
 Education forms a person’s character
 It should stress moral behavior and students should be
mentored by benevolent teachers
Confucianism

His writings became a philosophy – system of beliefs and


values, that became known as Confucianism.
 concerned primarily with restoring social stability and
order
 What is the basis of a stable, unified, and enduring social
order?
 a system of social and ethical philosophy
 “only when character is cultivated are our families regulated;
only when families are regulated are states well governed.”
Beliefs
o They believe in the great God, whom they worship and offer sacrifices to.

o They believe that the Earth has a separate God as does the sun, the moon, the

stars, the clouds, and the mountains.


o Angels occupy a very high position in Confucianism, they are offered sacrifices

as well.
o Also believe that the spirits of their ancestors are immortal.

o They don’t believe in heaven, hell, or the resurrection of the body.

o Mainly concerned with moral values.

The Five Constant Virtues

o Ren- the virtue of benevolence, charity and humanity.

o Yi- honesty, uprightness.

o Zhong- doing ones best.

o Shu- consideration of others.

o Li- good manners, politeness, ceremony, or worship.
