FUNCTIONS OF

GOVERNMENT
1. Foreign Diplomacy- handling foreign is one of
the most important functions performed by the
national, central government of a sovereign state
-it is the process through sovereign state,
interacting with other sovereign states in the
international arena, seeks to protect and further its
own national interest by all means other than
waging a hot war.

2. Military Defense- a political society’s national or


central government is responsible for preserving the
security of that society from foreign aggression.
-it is one of the oldest and most important function
of government.
3. Domestic Order- a government must maintain
internal peace- peace among individuals and
groups within the society. Internal peace or
domestic order is referred as “domestic tranquility”.

4. Administration of Justice- to enforce the “rule of


law” a government must operate a system of laws
and courts that (1.makes all adult citizens equal
under the law. (2. Provides them equal opportunities
to obtain just settlement of their civil disputes and
receive fair treatments.
8. Promotion of Economic growth and Development- the
central government of a modern society seeks to
facilitate and foster the growth and development of the
nation’s overall economy the government actively
pursues public policies especially in the areas of taxation,
foreign trade and regulation of and subsidies for
domestic economic
.
9. Social Welfare- also known as “public assistance”,
public aide” and public welfare-consists of government
programs to provide assistance to the poor.

10.Social Insurance- in order to insure the income


security of citizens and thereby prevent future poverty,
contemporary government in relatively wealthy societies
provide for personal insurance.
5. Protection of Civil liberties- a most important function
of government in a constitutional democratic society is
to protects civil liberties.

6. Provision for and Regulations of the conduct of


Elections- in a constitutional democratic society, a vitally
important constitutional duty of government is to (1.
Provide for free and meaningful elections.(2. Regulate
the conduct of these elections so as to ensure that they
are carried on fairly ,honesty and peacefully.

7. Provision for Public goods and Services- public good


and services are goods and services provided by the
government. They are goods and services provided by
a public institutions, rather than by private institution.
Types of
Government
Monarchy
- Has king or queen, who has absolute power.
Power is passed down through the family.

Meritocracy
- Responsibilities are given based on demonstrated
talent and ability

Republic
- Power resides in elected individuals representing
the citizen body

Dictatorship
- Form of government where authority is by a person
or political entity
Aristocracy
- A government ruled by the aristocrat. Aristocrat
are typically wealthy, educated people.

Democracy
- A “ruled by the people”. In a democracy, the
people govern

Oligarchy
- A form of government in which power effectively
rests with a small elite segment.

Theocracy
- A form of government in which a God or deity is
recognized as the supreme civil ruler.
