Origin of Filipino Values
Filipino Values System is defined by the
way of people live their life as an influence
of one’s culture.

Two Models of Filipino Values


A. Exogenous model (Foreign)
B. Indigenous model (Traditional)
Three Main Traits Underlie Filipino
Values and Value-orientation:

 Personalism- is the emphasis Filipinos give to


interpersonal relations or face-to-face encounters.
 Familialism- emphasises the welfare and interest of
the family over those of the community. The family is
the basis of group action and almost all community
activity centers on the family.
 Particularism- results from the strong family
influence on individual and group behaviour. Knowing
how to entertain people (marunong umasikaso ng
kapwa) is important.
Universal Human Values of
Filipino

Theoretical - places high importance on


discovery of truth through a critical and
rational approach.
Economic - emphasizes on the useful
and practical form of values.
Aesthetic - places highest value on form
and harmony.
Social - highest value is given to love of
people.
Political - emphasizes on acquisition of
power and influence.
Religious - concerned with unity
of experience and understanding of
cosmos as a whole.
The History of
Filipino Values
Filipino Values – A product of
Eastern and Western Culture.
There are three aggrupation:
They are the Vatican with respect and
morals.
The conference of Islamic nations with
respect to national integration and
segregation.
The united states of America with respect
to business, industry and economy.
“A Filipino has an American Mind, Spanish
heart and Malay roots”

Personally the Filipino value more their


honor (karangalan) and status than
anything else.
The First Filipino Values
The Filipinos give more emphasis on
social relationships
They engaged themselves in mutual
cooperation or bayanihan.
Smooth Interpersonal
Relationship (SIR)
A strong cultural force among Filipinos in
their effort to achieve social acceptance
and maintain harmonious relationships.

Positive Filipino Values
1. Paggalang (Respect)
 Filipinos are accustomed to using the
words “po,” “opo,” and “ho” when they are
conversing with older people.

2. Pakikisama
 the connotation of getting along with
people in general.
3. Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude)
Denotes a sense of gratitude

4. Amor Propio(self-love)

5. Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya
This implies that a person will place a high
regard on their family and prioritize that
before anything else.
6. Hiya (Shame)
The uncomfortable feeling of being found
in an unacceptable position.

7. Maganda/Mabuting Pakikitungo
(Hospitality)
Filipinos known are known to be friendly
and welcoming to strangers or guests.

8. Magaling Makibagay (Flexible)


Negative Filipino Values
1. Bahala na Attitude
Withdrawal from certain undertaking &
leaving everything to God.

2. Colonial Mentality
the internalized attitude of ethnic or cultural
inferiority felt by a people as a result
of colonization.
3. Crab Mentality
An attempt to “pull down” someone who
has achieved success beyond the others.

4. Filipino Time
Attitude of impreciseness towards time. In
reality, it means always late.

5. Gaya Gaya Attitude


 Attitude of imitating or copying other
6. Mañana Habit
Delaying or setting aside a certain task.

7. Ningas-kugon
 Being enthusiastic only during the start of
new undertaking but end up dismally in
accomplishing nothing.
What are these
values for?
A value may be either a thing , idea,
person , goal, principle or rule standard,
convention or a vision

The values of the Filipinos have been


looked upon by foreigners.
We use values to guide our dealings with
others, with our friends and family, in
businesses and professional.

 Values mold our faith, which shows that


we are mindful about others.

We established our own identity.


General Types of Values
Classification of values is said to be
arbitrary and by no mean comprehensive.
They are classified under three sets and
these are Set A, Set B, and Set C.
