 Extension is aimed at helping its clients. This is a
basic premise of extension that extension
practitioners, need to consider as they make
decisions on the allocation and prioritization of
scarce resources.
 Altruism concerns about being kind hearted to
others. Its not that we need to show sympathy. But
we need to emphasize the issue.
 An altruist never be self centric rather he is
philanthropic. When look into the history of
extension majority of pre-independence extensions
efforts have philanthropic approach only.
 Extension as a concept believes in being
philanthropic and altruistic.
 Extension is a non-formal method of adult
education. Extension practitioners therefor
should be knowledgeable about how adults
learn. Appropriate teaching methodologies
should be generated.
 Extension is a communication intervention. Therefore,
extension practitioners need to be knowledgeable
about the communication process to be effective
bearers of knowledge.
 Communication is the process of exchange of ideas,
facts, feelings between two or more people so that
commonness can be established among them about the
issue under discussion.
 Hence we say that communication should be
consequential, persistent, smart and direct.
 The success of communication is determined by the
performance of elements of communication in a
satisfactory/faithful manner.
 Extension is aimed at inducing behavioral
changes among clients. Extension practitioners
are expected to be knowledgeable about socio-
psychological process that may affects clients
behavior.
 The behavioral dimension has direct relationship
with the educational dimension. Behavior
changes only through education, may it be
formal, not formal or non-formal.
 Extension disseminate or transfers
technology to its clients. Extension has help
identify appropriate technology to its clients.
This entails skills in a diagnosing technical
problems.
 Extension has been understood as the
process of transfer of technology. Hence the
inseparable part of extension process is
“Technology”.
 Extension aims at linking a research with its
clients. Effective feedback mechanisms must be
set in a place to facilitate the establishment of
strong linkages between the researchers/
scientist and the farmers/clients.
 May it be home science, agriculture and allied
sciences, inputs are essential. As there is change
technology there is need for inputs. The latest
technology is more input intensive. For every
production process/enterprise there is need for
various types of inputs. Even though it becomes
subjective to arrange the required inputs to all the
clients, nevertheless necessary interventions can be
ensured for availability of inputs. When we
discuss about the inputs, most of the time we
concentrate on tangible inputs. There's a intangible
input which is very crucial “appropriate
information”.
 The concept of management can better be
understood by dividing the term into the three
parts. First one “manage” (management aspect),
second “men” (human resources) and third
“technically” (technological and technical aspects).
 Samantha (1992) defines management of extension
as the process by which people, technology, job
tasks and other resources are combined and
coordinated so as to effectively achieve extension
objectives for agricultural development.
