Self Driving Cars: Seminar

This document summarizes a seminar on self-driving cars. It discusses (1) the different levels of car autonomy as defined by SAE; (2) the components used in driverless cars like radar, lidar, and sensors; and (3) how these components work together with artificial intelligence and digital maps to navigate and drive the vehicle without human input. Potential advantages are fewer accidents and increased road capacity, while obstacles include changing regulations and infrastructure to accommodate autonomous vehicles. The future of transportation lies in increased automation and competition in developing self-driving car technology.

INTRODUCTION
WHAT ARE DRIVERLESS CARS?
 Can get from one place to another without human
interference
 Also known as Autonomous Vehicles
 Google driverless cars are most popular in the world
FEATURES:-
 Should detect outer environment
 It should have analyzing unit as system processor
 Should find its position on the road

4
COMPONENTS OF A DRIVERLESS CAR
 Radar
 Lidar System
 Laser Range Finder
 Ultrasonic Sensors
 Position Sensor
 Orientation Sensor
 GPS Receiver
 Digital Maps
 Aerial for Geo location

5
WORKING MECHANISM
 Driver sets a destination and car’s software calculates a route
and starts the car on its way.
 A rotating, roof-mounted LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)
sensor monitors a 60-meter range around the car and creates
a dynamic 3-D map of the car’s current environment.
 A sensor on the left rear wheel monitors sideways movement
to detect the car’s position relative to the 3-D map.
 Radar systems in the front and rear bumpers calculate
distances to obstacles.
6
Working continues
 Artificial intelligence software in the car is connected to
all the sensors and has input from Google Street View
and video cameras.
 The AI simulates human perceptual and decision making
processes and controls driving systems such as steering
and brakes.
 The car’s software consults Google Maps for advance
notice of things like landmarks and traffic signs and lights.
 An override function is available to allow a human to
take control of the vehicle.

THE FLOW CHART

10
VEHICULAR COMMUNICATION
 Vehicular communication systems are a type of network in
which vehicles and roadside units are the communicating
nodes, providing each other with information
 Contain two types of nodes: vehicles and roadside stations.
Both are dedicated short-range communications (DSRC)
devices works in 5.9 GHz band with bandwidth of 75 MHz and
approximate range of 1000 m.
 The network support both private data and public
communications but higher priority is given to public
communications.
11
GOOGLE DRIVERLESS CARS
 Google Self-Driving Car is the real name of the project
that involves developing technology for autonomous
cars, mainly electric cars.
 The software powering Google’s cars is called Google
Chauffeur. Lettering on each car identifies it as a “self-
driving car”.
 The project is led by Google Engineer Chris Urmson.
 Google cars have about $150,000 in equipment including
a $70,000 LIDAR system. The range finder is mounted on
the top is a Velodyne 64-beam laser.
12
POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES
 Fewer traffic collisions
 Roadway capacity will be increased
 Higher speed limit can be sets for autonomous cars

 Alleviation of parking scarcity

 Removal of constraints on the user of cars
 Vehicular Communication together with autonomous car system
will eliminate the need of traffic signal and other traffic
requirement.
 Smoother ride
 Increased human work efficiency
13
POTENTIAL OBSTACLES
 First problem is reluctance by individuals to relinquish control of
their cars
 A car’s computer could potentially be compromised
 implementation of legal framework and establishment of
government regulations for self-driving cars.
 Self-driving cars could potentially be loaded with explosives.
 Susceptibility of car’s navigation system to different types of
weather.
 Current road infrastructure may need changes for autonomous cars.
 diminish the use of public transport
 High Cost
14
FUTURE SCOPE

15
CONCLUSION
 Future of transportation and mankind.
 Competition like DARPA and companies like Google,
Mercedes are fueling the development.
 The autonomous car have numerous advantages,
 Ever decreasing cost of technology, and involvement of
big automotive giants.
 4 states in USA namely Nevada, Florida, California, and
Michigan, along with District of Columbia who have
successfully enacted laws addressing autonomous
vehicles
