This document discusses lens equations and how to determine image characteristics formed by lenses. It defines key lens terms like focal length and image distance and signs for convex and concave lenses. An example problem demonstrates using the lens equation to calculate image distance and size given object distance and lens focal length. Group activities provide additional practice problems for learners to solve. Key lesson objectives are determining quantitative image characteristics and proper lens selection/use.

THE LENS
EQUATION YOU RAYS ME UP. 1. Graph the image using the ray diagram. 2. Identify the following in the formed image by lens: Location Orientation Size Types LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, learners should be
able to: Determine the quantitative characteristics of image formed by lenses. Derive the lens equation.
Promote proper selection and use of lenses.
THE SIGN COVENTIONS FOR LENSES • f is + if the lens is a double convex lens (converging lens)
• f is - if the lens is a double concave lens (diverging lens)
• q is + if the image is a real image and located behind the lens
• q is - if the image is a virtual image and located on the object’s side of the lens • h’ is + if the image is an upright image (and therefore, also virtual) • h’ is - if the image an inverted image (and therefore, also real) THEREFORE If the focal length and the distance of the image is POSTIVE (+) and the image height is NEGATIVE (-) the lens is CONVEX
If the focal length and the distance of the
image is NEGATIVE (-)and the image height is POSITIVE(+) the lens is CONCAVE Lens Equation 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 = + 𝒇 𝒒 𝒑 where: f - focal length or distance from the mirror and the focal point,F p - distance of the object from the lens q - distance of the image from the lens Sample Problem A 5.00-cm tall light bulb is placed at a distance of 45.0 cm from a convex lens having a focal length of 10.5 cm. Determine the image distance and the image size. Given: Find: height of the object, h = 5.00 cm distance of the image, q = ? distance of the object, p = 45.0 cm height of the image, h’ = ? focal point, f = 10.5 cm GROUP ACTIVITY An object is placed 33.7 cm from the diverging lens with a focal length of -10.7 cm. Determine the image distance. What is the image distance and image size if a 5.00-cm tall light bulb is placed a distance of 45.5 cm from a convex lens having a focal length of 15.4 cm? What is the image distance and image size if a 3.00-cm tall light bulb is placed a distance of 30.5 cm from a diverging lens having a focal length of -10.2 cm? Determine the image distance and image height for a 8.00-cm tall object placed 46.5 cm from a convex lens having a focal length of 16.0 cm. GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1.What particular devices or materials
do you use that has lens? 2.How can you use your understanding of lenses in selecting and using devices/ materials with lens? Answer the problem below.
A 3.10-cm diameter coin is placed a
distance of 25.0 cm from a concave lens that has a focal length of -11.0 cm. Determine the image distance and the diameter of the image. Thank you!!!
