carrying mainly news stories but
also opinions and
advertisement.
•In 2010, the World Association
of Newspaper(WAN) reported
that there were 14,853
newspaper titles worldwide
and they are read by 519
million people.

•Periodicity
• The staple of newspapers are stories which are
newsworthy, that is interesting enough to audience so
it should be reported. Newsworthiness defined in many
ways:
1. The exceptional or out of ordinary
2. Proximity
3. Impact
4. Prominence
5. Conflict
6. Human Interest
•Newspapers are being altered in the
wake of developments in
information and communication
technology. Before newspaper only
published only using print medium.
Now they also have online edition.
5.2 BROADCAST MEDIA : RADIO AND
TELEVISION
•In many countries radio is the most
available and widely used medium of
mass communication followed by
television.
RADIO
• Why radio so dominant among the mass media?
Following are the reasons:
Cost Effective
Low demand on literacy skills
Portability
A background medium
Accessibility to the visually challenged because
it is a sound medium.
RADIO
•Radio programs are broadcast from a
centrally located source called a
station. Radio stations may be
commercial or government owned
stations. Commercial stations obtain
revenue from advertising.
TELEVISION
•Next to radio in popularity,
according to the UNESCO World
Communication and Information
Report. Filipinos spend between
four and five hours per day
watching television.
TELEVISION
•Its capacity to transmit pictures and sound
and to do so live is televisions mains
strength as a mass medium. Television has
the “sense of intimacy and personal
involvement that it seems to cultivate
between spectator and presenter or the
actors and participant on the screen”.

•In the Philippines, as commercial
enterprises, television lifeblood is
advertising. Kantar media disclosed that
hair care products dominated all
commercial spots as six out of 10
advertisements aired on local are
shampoo and conditioner products.

•Primarily considered a medium of
entertainment, it plays vital role in modern
politics. Considered as main source of news and
information for most people and main channel
between politician and citizens, especially at
election times.
•Another role is that of educator for children at
school and adults at home
NEW MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA
• New media
• Covers the set of applied communication
technologies that continue to evolve.
• Interactive form of communication that use the
internet, including podcasts, blogs, social
networks, wikis and all other computer aided
communication formats that are available
online.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW MEDIA
• Interactivity
• Ubiquity and de-locatedness
• Accessible to individual users as senders or receivers
• A medium of both mass and personal communication
• Hypertextuality
• Multimediality
SOCIAL MEDIA
•Internet based application that build on
ideological and technological foundation
of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation
and exchange of user generated
content.

• Classified into six types namely
• Social networking sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram
• Collaborative projects such as Wikepedia
• Content communities such as Youtube
• Virtual game worlds such as World of Warcraft
• Technologies such as blogs, email, instant
messaging etc..

•Internet users spend more time in
social media than any other sites.
Asia ranked second to Europe in
terms of number of Facebook
users around the world.
