Lecture 1

Biostatistics refers to statistics applied to biological and medical data. It involves collecting, organizing, summarizing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data, as well as drawing conclusions. Descriptive statistics summarizes data through measures like averages and prevalence rates, while inferential statistics allows generalizing from samples to populations through techniques like hypothesis testing and predicting relationships. A population is the entire set of measurements of interest, while a sample is a subset selected from the population that aims to represent it.

What is
BIOSTATISTICS
Part A
LECTURE 1
What is Statistics? 2

 The science of data:

 Collecting
 Organizing
 Summarizing
 Analyzing
 Interpreting
 Presenting
 Drawing conclusions
If data are related to Biological or Medical sciences
called Biostatistics.
The biostatistics refers to: 3

 The recorded data such as

 Number of traffic accidents,
 Size of enrollment,
 Number of patients visiting a clinic
 The characteristics calculated for a data set, for
example
 Average household size,
 Prevalence of smoking,
 Infant morality rate,
 etc.
Types of Statistics 4

 Statistics as subject may be divided into

1. Descriptive statistics

2. Inferential statistics
Cont... 5

 Descriptive statistics consists of the collection,

organization, summarization, and presentation of

data. e.g. census

 Inferential statistics consists of generalizing from

samples to populations, hypothesis testing,

determining relationships among variables, and

making predictions.
Population vs. Sample 6

 Population
 The set of all measurements of interest to the
investigator.

 Sample
 Any subset of all measurements selected from the
population.
A random sample is a good representative of
population
Population vs. Sample 7

Population Sample
Examples of population 8

 Monthly income of households in Pakistan

 Households in Karachi who have death of at least one

family member in past one year

 Number of TB Patients in Pakistan

Examples of Sample 9

 A survey of 1,000 households taken from all parts of

Pakistan to assess their monthly income

 A survey of 500 households conducted in Karachi to

know who have death of at least one family member
in past one year

 A survey of 2500 TB patients conducted at different

TB clinics in Pakistan
Observation 10

 In statistics observation is numerically

recording of information.

 Whether it is physical measurement such as

height or weight

 A classification

 Or even answer to a question yes, no
