Project Lifecycle

The document discusses project life cycles and their phases. It notes that most projects are broken down into logical phases for better management control. The typical phases in a project life cycle are initiation, planning, execution, and closure. Each phase is marked by deliverables and ends with a review. The planning phase involves creating plans for resources, finances, quality, communication, and risks. The execution phase is when the project deliverables are built and presented for signoff, requiring monitoring and control processes. In the closure phase, deliverables are handed over and the project is formally closed with a review of lessons learned.

PROJECT LIFE CYCLES

Project Life Cycle

Project management is about acquiring or achieving the project
goal.
Most projects need to be broken down into a logical sequence of
‘phases’, known as the project life cycle.
Organisations normally break a project down into several project
phases for better management control
Collectively, the project phases are known as the project life cycle
Goals of the project
 Goal is the desired result of an activity, which may be achieved within the
limits of a certain time interval.
Goals must have a clear meaning. The results obtained in achieving a goal must
be measurable, and the established constraints and requirements, must be
feasible, that is, goals must be within the field of acceptable solutions of the
project
PHASES IN PROJECT LIFE CYCLE
 Initiation
 Planning
 Executing
 Closure
PHASES IN PROJECT LIFE CYCLE
 Each project phase is marked by the completion of one or more
deliverables.
Each phase ends with a review of the deliverables and performance
in order to detect and correct errors and to decide if the project
should continue into the next phase.
The phase end reviews are often called phase exits or stage gates.

Project
definition
Initiation of a project
 Create an idea Create an organizational structure for the
project
 Identify the project vision and objectives
 Document the overall implementation plan
 Define the complete scope of the project
 List any risks, issues and assumptions
 List all of the critical project deliverables
 Appoint the project team
 State the customers and project
stakeholders  Set up the project office
List the key roles and their responsibilities
Planning of a project
 Create a Project Plan
 Create a Resource Plan
 Create a Financial Plan
 Create a Quality Plan
 Create a Communication Plan
 Create a Risk Plan
 Contact the Supplies
Project Execution
 The Project Execution Phase is the third phase in the project life cycle. In this
phase, you will build the physical project deliverables and present them to your
customer for signoff.
 The Project Execution Phase is usually the longest phase in the project life
cycle and it typically consumes the most energy and the most resources.
 To enable you to monitor and control the project during this phase, you will
need to implement a range of management processes.
 These processes help you to manage time, cost, quality, change, risks and
issues. They also help you to manage procurement, customer acceptance and
communications.
Project Closure
 The Project Closure Phase is the fourth and last phase in the project life cycle.
In this phase, you will formally close your project and then report its overall level
of success to your sponsor.
 Project Closure involves handing over the deliverables to your customer,
passing the documentation to the business, cancelling supplier contracts,
releasing staff and equipment, and informing stakeholders of the closure of the
project.
 After the project has been closed, a Post Implementation Review is completed
to determine the projects success and identify the lessons learned.
Common characteristics of PLCs
 Cost and staff levels low in early phases of the project

 Probability of failure, risk and uncertainty are highest in the early phases

 Ability of stakeholders to influence the outcome of the project are highest at the beginning of
the project

 Although many projects have similar phase names, with similar work requirements, few are
identical

 Sub-projects within a project also have distinct project life cycles

Construction Project Example
Project Life Cycle (PLC) as a Tool
 PLC is a management tool to make it easier to manage the project sequence
 The choice of phases vary from industry to industry and the PLC will vary to
suit the needs of the participants
 Different project managers choose different PLC’s, depending on the nature of
the task i.e. Engineering, software development etc.
