Principles of Art and Design

Reporter by: Cherrylen A. Etchon

BSCpE II
The principles of art and design are the foundation in creating an
art. They represent how the artist, the elements of art create a
better effect as well as to help the artist to convey his intent.
There are 11 Principles of Art and Design
which are;
1.Harmony
2.Rhythm
3.Balance
4.Proportion
5.Emphasis
6.Movement
7.Pattern
8.Unity/Variety
9.Novelity of Newness
10.Utility/Adaptability,or function
11.Contrast
1.)HARMONY

• is the principles which produces as impression of unity

through the selection and arrangement of consistent objects or
ideas.
• It is the quality which unifies every part of an arrangement.
• If there is harmony ,there is order.Every orderly arrangement is
harmonious
Harmony has five aspects which are;

1. Harmony of lines and shapes

2. Harmony of size
3.Harmony of color
4.Harmony of texture
5.Harmony of idea
1. Harmony of lines and
shapes

-Transitional Lines

- Contrasting/Opposing
Lines

-Repetition
Transitional Line

-Softens and modifies other

lines
-It is usually curved,graceful
line which connects two or
more opposing lines.
REPETITION

-if a small rectangle is

placed within another a
bigger triangle so their
sides are parallel.

-repetition shows harmony

Contrasting/Opposing
Lines

-A straight line which

intersects each other and
form angles.
2.Harmony of size
3.Harmony of color

• Means using two or more

colors in decorating an
article or object.It does not
mean mixing the colors.
• Color combination giving
the most pleasure are
most likely to be those
possessing harmony or
unity.
4.Harmony of texture

• The character of texture can

be determined by feeling the
object with the fingertips or
by looking at it.
• Coarse textures should not
combined with fine textures.
5.Harmony of idea

• It is not enough that

shapes,sizes and textures
have something in
common: There must be
harmony in the idea
presented together.
2. Rhythm
 is the regular, uniform,or related visual movement made through the
repetition of a unit of motif.
 It is the basis of almost all performing arts because it is the principle
which is most quickly felt.
 A strong ,regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound.
 Synchoronization
 Motif-a decorative design or pattern
 A dominant feature or part repeated in a design or decoration.
 Not all movements in a design are rhythmical
 Rhythm is not only applied to graphic arts but also to
architecture,music,textiles,laces,furniture,glassware,dresses,and
many more.
Rhythm is classified into two: Formal and Informal

1.Formal/Uniform rhythm- The

repetition of a motif in regular
arrangement.

2.Informal/Free rhythm-The
repetition of a motif with variation
in its form and arrangement.
3.Balance

 A quality which gives a feeling of rest, repose, equilibrium,or stabilty.

 In art,we don't exactly arrange objects of equal physical weights or
sizes to produce balance. It is the visual weights lines, forms, values,
textures and colors.

 VISUAL WEIGHT- The quality which gains and holds attention.

Balance is divided into two;
1.)Symmetrical Balance- is
the balance of equal visual
weights placed at equal
distance from the axis.

2.)Asymmetrical Balance- is
the balance of unequal visual
weights,the heavier one being
nearer the axis and lighter one
farther.
4. Proportion
 A quality of art shows pleasing
relationship between a whole and
its parts and between the parts
themselves.

Examples; a building in
Athens,Greece, is considered the
most perfectly proportioned
achitectural structure in the world.
3 ASPECTS OF PROPORTION

1.proportion in grouping of objects

2.proportion in space division
3.proportion in Scales
5.Emphasis
 is the principle of art which
tends to carry the eyes from the
center of interest or dominant
part of any composition to the
less important or subordinate
part.

 Artist use emphasis to make

certain parts of their artwork
standout and grab your
attention.
Methods in Emphasizing Objects
a. By arrangement or grouping of
objects- if objects are grouped
together,the one to be emphasized
should be located at the center should
be the bigger and brightest in color.
b.By decoration- Objects which have
decorations are given more emphasis
than those without them.
c.By color contrast- Contrasting colors
such as the complementary
combination and the triads are more
emphatic than analogous or any other
related harmonies.
6. Movement

-is the result of using the

elements of art that they move
the viewer's eye around and
within the image; A sense of
movement can be created by
diagonal or curvy lines, either
real or implied,by the illusion of
space,by repetition,by
energetic mark-making.
7. Pattern
-is the uniform repetition of any of
the elements of art or any
Allover pattern Design
combinition thereof.Anything can
be turned into a pattern through
repetition.Some classic patterns
are spirals,grids,weaves.

For examples of different pattern
types see the Artlandia Glossary of
pattern Design. Basketweave pattern Design
8. Unity/Variety
• You want your painting to feel unified
such that all the elements fit together
comfortably.Too much unity creates
monotony,too much variety creates
chaos.you need both

• A set of furniture which is arranged

in a certain way and remains as it is for
long periods of time appears to be
monotonous.
9. Novelty of Newness

• A new style of dress

appears more attractive
and interesting than
ordinary dress design.
Novelty provides the best
opportunity for developing
one's creative ability.
10. Utility,Adaptability, or function

• A work of art must not only

posses beauty but also
utility.The object must be
adaptable to the purpose
for which it is made.
11. Contrast

• This art principle is

synonymous to opposition or
contradiction. It has some
relationships with balance and
emphasis.Two contrasting
lines or colors may balance
each other. The center of
interest in a composition is in
contrast with the subordinating
parts in the same composition.
The Rule of Thirds

-is also called the “rule of thumb”.This is a guideline which

appears to the process of composing visual images like
design, films,paintings,and photographs.
