Drilling Fluids Management
The Mud Technologist/Engineer -
manages the fluids and is involves
with the following
● Preparation and Maintenance
● Reporting
● Analysis
● Logistics
Drilling Fluid Engineering
Involves
• Routine testing and maintenance of drilling fluids
• Is a combination of science (application of chemistry,
physics, & simple math) and art (experience)
• Two types of testing: routine and diagnostic (full test)
– In routine testing the mud weight, viscosity (marsh funnel
and rotational) and filter loss (mud filtrate and cake
thickness) are measured
• Performs about every 2 or 4 hours
– In diagnostic testing, all the physical and chemical
properties are measured
• Performs probably once a day depending on the drilling problems
The Drilling Fluids Technologist or
Mud Engineer
Responsibilities include
● Prepare and check the mud
● Report the mud properties
● Specify treatments
● Recommend improvements
● Coordinate fluid handling
● Calculate fluid engineering properties
● Maintain products/fluid inventory
The Drilling Fluids Technologist
Other responsibilities are
• Check equipment
• Understand API/ISO procedures
– RP 13B-1, 13-B2
– ISO 10414-1, 10414-2
• Accuracy
• Calibration of equipment
The Drilling Fluids Technologist
Report the Mud Properties
• Mud weight
• API/ISO • Rheological properties
• Mud Report • Fluid loss properties
Form • Chemistry
• Solids
• Recommend
Improvements
