• She was the daughter of Henry VIII
and Anne Boleyn

the Place of Placentia.
• She was named after her parental
grandmother, Elizabeth of York
• Her mother was executed when she
was 3 years old

after her mother died at
the age of 3.
 She was stripped of her
princess title and simply
called a lady.
 Her and Edward VI
became close because
they were both

November17, 1558 at the age of 25
 Reigned 4 years and 4 months
 She was locked in the Tower of
London by her half sister Mary,
because she was a threat to the
throne

Lord Burghley, Sir Francis
Walsingham, Sir Nicholas
Bacon, and Sir Robert Cecil
 Her step-uncle Edward
Seymour (Edward VI’s
uncle) wanted to marry
her to gain power
 Greatest Military threat was
the Spanish Armada which
sailed toward England in
1589.
 England prevailed and
became the supreme naval
power.
Alliances
 By 1568 English
relations with the
Hapsburgs (Catholic)
deteriorated
 She had ties to the
French Huguenots, and
secretly gave aid to
them during the French
Wars of Religion.
 In 1572 she made an
alliance with the French
monarch, the St.
Bartholomew’s day
massacre strained the
relationship but did not
break it.
Her legacy
 Militarily unsuccessful
 She funded John Cabot, which resulted in
the first English claim to overseas territory
(Newfoundland)
Despite this she was unable to build on those claims with
permanent overseas settlements as the Stuarts did
 Stabilized finances and religious conflicts
after Bloody Mary
 Patronized the arts and developed culture.
