Development of containerization
• Concept of containerization begun in 1766 when James Brindley first designed the
box boat called “Starvationer” with 10 wooden containers.
• In 1950, a ship owner Malcom Purcell McLean standardized the size of containers
and transported the goods in metal containers, which saved a lot of space and
loading-unloading time.
• With the help of Engineer Keith Tantlinger, McLean developed modern container
which can be easily fitted on trucks and trains for multi-modal transportation.
• That container design also incorporated a locking mechanism on each corners to
easily secure and lift container using cranes.
• Now a lot of automation helped to load the ship within 2-3 hours.
Types of containers
Some terminologies
• Full Container Load (FCL): Door-to-door concept giving high security
• Less than Container Load (LCL): Terminal-to-Terminal concept with
accumulation of different shippers in single consignment.
• TEU: Twenty–foot Equivalent Unit
• Multimodal Transportation: Movement of goods from one location to another
with several modes of transportation under one document without breaking
up the unit load.
• Container Handling Equipment’s:
1. Reach Stacker
2. Forklift Truck
3. Ship-to-shore container Crane
4. Rail Mounted Gantry Crane
5. Portal Slewing Crane
