DAYNA.JAYNSTEIN@RRCC.EDU
FIRST!

Pass your classes and rotations!

PA SCHOOL

Requirements to pass the program:

 Completion of all didactic classes and rotations with the grade of “C” or
better – “B” or better for A/B/F classes, “pass” for pass/fail classes

 Adequate completion of patient logs

 Appropriate distribution of clinical settings, patient populations, and
patient lifespan
 Appropriate completion of clinical skills

 Just prior to the day of graduation you will have an Exit Interview with
PD Dobbs
 If you have completed all requirements you will be DONE!
 The program will “release” you to take the PANCE after your exit interview
Patient Logs

Although tedious, I cannot stress enough the

importance of these logs
 You will NOT graduate if these are not complete
 This is an ARC-PA standard! The program is not trying to make
this more difficult for you!
 While there are no “minimum” logging requirements, know that
your logs will be regularly reviewed – make sure you are staying
within the standard!
 If you feel you are low in a specific population (such as peds or
geriatrics) please let your advisor know right away!
 Your logs may help you get hospital credentialing or a job!
CERTIFICATION

Certification is done through NCCPA (National

Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants)

Certification = passing the PANCE

Now you are a PA-C

LICENSING

Licensing is done through the state

 You can be licensed in multiple states

Once you have completed all requirements for

graduation the school will automatically submit a
form stating you have completed a PA program and
can obtain a PA medical license
 P2 Form
LICENISING

Once you pass the PANCE, your score will be sent to

the licensing board in the state in which you are
applying

Be patient – this is not a speedy process!

In CO – DORA (Department of Regulatory Agencies)

APPLYING FOR A LICENSE

Application is found online – “Application for

Original License”

You may apply for your license before you have a

supervising physician
 You have 180 days to get one
 Will need to submit a form when you get one

CO does not provide temporary licenses!

 Don’t lose your license before you even have it!
APPLYING FOR A LICENSE

Cost: $262 (fee increases come out July 1st every year)

Your license will expire on Jan 31st of all EVEN years

 If you are licensed within 120 days of the Jan expiration date, you
will be “bumped” to the next cycle

Reapplying is easy – they just want your money!

 $248
 Every 2 years (build this into your contract!)
CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE

Certification Maintenance Fee - $130 every 2 years

CME (Continuing Medical Education)

 Logged on the NCCPA website
 100 CME’s every 2 years
 50 hours of category I
• Category I – approved by AAPA, AAFP, AMA
• 20 of which must be through self assessment or performance
improvement
 50 hours of category II – self assessment, precepting

http://www.nccpa.net/CertMain
CME

If you don’t meet the CME requirement?

 Contact the NCCPA
 They will likely suspend your license – better than losing it!

You may be audited

 Randomly selects “a few PA’s”
 Must provide proof you completed the category CME hours you
logged  keep these records/certificates!
RECERTIFACTION

PANRE (Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam)

 You will take the PANRE every 10 years, can take in the 9 th or 10th yr
 May attempt twice in the 9th year and twice in the 10th year, 90 days between tries

Cost: $350

PANRE is a generalist exam of 240 questions

 4 hours of total test time
• 4 blocks of 60 questions in 60 minutes with a total of 45 minutes of break between each
block

 You can direct 40% of the questions to 3 areas:

• Adult Medicine
• Surgery
• Primary care
RECERTIFICATION

PANRE practice exams are available online

 Each practice exam is $35 (typically 2 or 3 available)
 120 questions taken from previous exams
 Gives detailed information on your strengths and weakness

Exam format is the same as the PANCE

DEA LICENSE

DEA – Drug Enforcement Administration

 Monitored by the Office of Diversion Control
 A DEA license is needed to prescribe any controlled substance
 Schedule I and II
 New requirement (that I LOVE!) all prescribers must be registered
and have access to the Colorado Drug Monitoring Program (CDMP)

 Cost: $731 every 3 years – ask for this in job negotiations, may or
may not get it
HOSPITAL CREDENTIALING

 The process in which a hospital gives you “privileges” to

practice at their facility

 It may take weeks to even months before you are

credentialed!

 You may need to provide some form of documentation,

such as an “activity log” showing that you have completed
the skills required for the position you have applied for
 Your patient logs are VERY important!
Jaynstein Example Timeframe

I graduated PA School April 18th

Sat for the PANCE April 26nd
Obtained NCCPA certification May 7th

Started at the hospital June 20th

That’s 2 months without pay!
