The ONLY NOBLE EXCUSE FOR DEBATE

is the search for the truth;

for debate seeks the truth
to move ourselves and our society.”

- Don Claro M. Recto

Argumentation
• Mode of discourse that involves critical
reasoning
• Argument
– A reasoned attempt to convince the audience
to accept a particular point of view about a
debatable topic
Elements of an Argument
• Topic  issue
• Proposition  conclusion
• Evidence  premises
– Facts (direct experience, verifiable reports)
– Opinion (interpretation of the meaning of a
factual evidence)
Fallacies

Fallacies of Language
• Equivocation

To make mistakes is natural.
Ergo, to make mistakes is good.
• Amphiboly
– John attacked the man with a knife.
• Accent
– I called him an unmitigated liar; it is true, and I
am sorry for it.
Fallacies of Matter
• Sweeping Statement
– Killing is bad; therefore, it is wrong for us to go
to war against the terrorists.

• Hasty Generalization
– Since democracy is good for the people of
USA, then it must be good to have democracy
everywhere in the world.
Fallacies of Relevance
• Ignoring the Issue
– Argumentum ad populum (Band Wagon)
– Argumentum ad ignorantium
– Argumentum ad baculum
– Argumentum ad misericordiam
– Argumentum ad hominem
– Argumentum ad verecundiam
• Begging the Question (petitio principii)
– Miracles are impossible because they cannot
happen.

• False Cause (post hoc ergo propter hoc)

– Night comes before day.
Therefore, night causes day.

• Slippery Slope
– Legalizing marijuana will lead to the legalization of
cocaine. If you legalize cocaine, you’ll be able to buy
crack and every other drug at your local 7-11.
• Red Herring
– The death penalty is the only way to punish
criminals. Why? Because the justice system
in this country has gone straight to hell—
what with murderers, rapists, and robbers
getting off scot-free! It has got to change!

• False Dilemma (Either-Or)

– Either we elect Mr. X or the economy goes
down the tubes. The choice should be
obvious.
