Accuracy
How can we say that we are accurate in terms of analysis in our laboratory??

• Regularly participating in Proficiency Test Program

 The z-scores of the PT result should be less than 2
• Analyze a Certified or Quality Reference Material
quarterly How?
 The results must be within the acceptance criteria
• Certificate of Analysis
1. Consensus Value – serves as the true value
2. Confidence Interval Depends on Level of Confidence
3. Tolerance Interval of Population
• Using %Recovery
 Spike Recovery
 Results must be within the acceptance criteria
(Refer to AOAC Table A5. Expected Recovery as a
function of analyte concentration
How to assess accuracy in our laboratory??

7.5.1 Trueness (accuracy), bias, FAO Soils Bulletin – 74,

Comparison of RPD vs RSD

Types of Precision Pros Cons

RPD • Good for high concentration • Not good for low
• < 20% is large (rule of thumb for concentrations esp. for ppb
aqueous samples) • For field duplicates
• Good for pH and EC

RSD • Wide range of conc. From % to • Replicate > 2

ppb • Not applicable for pH and EC
• Has a good reference (AOAC unless converted to mass
table appendix F) fraction
• Has a higher acceptance criteria
for low concentrations
Can WE use %RSD & %RPD as a precision test for pH?

pH - POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN ION

Can WE use %RSD as a precision test for pH?
Can WE use %RPD as a precision test for pH?

Types of Precision Pros Cons

RPD • Good for high concentration • Not good for low

• < 20% is large (rule of thumb for concentrations esp. for ppb
aqueous samples) • For field duplicates
• Good for pH and EC

• The lower the concentration

the higher the %RPD How about
higher pH
values or
Alkaline?
HOW ARE WE GOING TO ASSESS
THE PRECISION OF OUR
REPLICATES IN TERMS OF pH
VALUES?
• Research an alternative Precision Test.
• Gather References that will support the
idea of using alternative Precision Test
aside from RSD and RPD
We are lucky, we
found an
alternative
Precision Test
STANDARD METHOD FOR EXAMINATION
OF WASTE AND WASTEWATER, 23rd. Soil Test Methods From the Southeastern United States
EDITION

BOTH REFERENCES USED STANDARD DEVIATION IN

ESTABLISHING ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR pH.
IS THAT POSSIBLE TO USE
STANDARD DEVIATION IN
ASSESSING PRECISION OF
REPLICATES??
SOIL SCIENCE SOCIETY OF AMERICA, BOOK SERIES
METHOD OF SOIL ANALYSIS, PART 3 CHEMICAL METHODS

THIS SUPPORTS HOW THEY

MADE THE PRECISIONS USED IN
SMEWW AND STSUS
• PRECISION CAN BE DETERMINED BY A STATISTICAL
METHOD CALLED A STANDARD DEVIATION

• STANDARD DEVIATION IS HOW MUCH, ON AVERAGE,

MEASUREMENTS DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER.

• HIGH STANDARD DEVIATION INDICATES LOW PRECISION

• LOW STANDARD DEVIATION INDICATES HIGH PRECISION
HOW ARE WE GOING TO
ESTABLISH PRECISION
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA??
• We can gather measured replicates
of from different laboratories.
• We can gather sufficient number of
measured replicates within our
laboratory.
SAMPLE ON HOW WE CAN ESTABLISH OUR
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA IN OUR LABORATORY
Sample Data for pH from previous
Control Chart of Quality Control
Material NOTE:
DATE Soil pH This is a sample data.
1/21/2020 5.04 This is not the official
1/14/2020 5.08 precision acceptance criteria
12/15/2020 5.09 As soon as ECQ is done we
can establish this in our
11/19/2019 5.04
laboratory
10/23/2019 5.03
10/21/2019 5.09
10/16/2019 5.10
10/9/2020 5.10
10/9/2019 5.09
10/2/2019 5.02
Ave 5.07
Stdev 0.03
Conclusion: Therefore, the precision acceptance
criteria data is +/- 0.03
• CAN WE USE OUR OLD CONTROL CHART QCM
DATA IN ESTABLISHING PRECISION ACCEPTANCE
CRITERIA??
• Yes, if the QCM data plotted in the
control chart is homogenized

NOTE:
THE QCM MUST UNDERGO
HOMOGENIETY TEST AND
RUN WITH CRM FOR
ACCURACY (WITHIN
ACCEPTABLE CRITERIA),
OTHERWISE THE PRECISION
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA WILL
BE INVALID
• HOW MANY MEASURED REPLICATES ARE WE
GOING TO USE. TO SAY THAT THE ESTABLISHED
PRECISION ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA IS
ADEQUATE ENOUGH?• The more measured replicates
the more scattered our data the
better the Standard deviation
For Accuracy:
• We always need ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA to
assess the accuracy of every parameter in
our laboratory

For Precision:
• We know that there are OTHER PRECISION
TEST aside from RPD and RSD
• We can establish acceptance criteria like
what SMEWW and STSUS did, using
STANDARD DEVIATION
