Important Characterstics Of Modern Architecture
• The period from late 18th century to the present has been described as one of the
most creative & productive times in the history of architecture. Architects
have used new materials & new building methods to develop the first
completely new styles in centuries.

• Architects wanted to break free from the ornamentation & highly decorative
revival structures & instead stressed on building’s simple & spare designs.

• Developments in iron and concrete.

• France showed the basics of steel reinforcement.

• Famous architect – Frank Lloyd Wright of the U.S.A, Walter Gropius &
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe of Germany, Le Corbusier of France etc.
INTRRODUCTION -
• Born - March 27, 1886 in Aachen, in the Nordhein
Westfalen region of Germany
• Died - August 17, 1969 (aged 83)Chicago
• Nationality – German 1886-1944
American 1944-1969
• Ludwig began his building career working with his
father who was a master stonemason.
• He began his architectural career as an apprentice at the studio
of Peter Behrens from 1908 to 1912, where he was exposed to
the current design theories and to progressive German culture.
• Mies married a schoolteacher Ada Bruhn.
• Awards - Order Pour le Mérite (1959)

BARCELONA PAVILION…
• 1928-29: Barcelona Pavilion,at
Barcelona, Spain
• One of Mies's most impressive works from
this period was the German Pavilion he
created for the Barcelona Exibition in Spain.
• This exhibition structure was a modern marvel of
glass, metal and stone. 
• This building was used for the official opening of
the German section of the exhibition.
•  A group of Spanish architects reconstructed the
pavilion permanently between 1983 and 1986.
Villa Tugendhat….
• It is a historical building between 1928-1930 in Brno,
Czech Republic.
•  Built of Reinforced concrete. 
• It is a  three-story villa (including basement ) on a
slope and faces the south-west .
• The second story consists of the main
living and social areas with the conservatory and the
terrace, and the kitchen and servants' rooms.
• The third story has the main entrance
from the street with a passage to the terrace, the
entrance hall, and rooms for the parents, children
and the nanny with appropriate facilities.
CROWN HALL….
•Widely regarded as Mies van Der Rohe's masterpiece, Crown Hall in
Chicago is one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th
Century Modernist movement.
•Crown Hall was completed in 1956 during Mies van der Rohe's tenure as
director of the Illinois Institute of Technology's Department of Architecture.
• Incorporating only steel and glass in its exterior design.”
