SOLAR SYSTEM
is the Sun and all the
 

objects that orbit around it.


THE SUN
 The sun is the center of the solar system and its also
considered as a kind of a star, because the sun has the same
structure as a star. The sun emits heat and light just like a
star.
 The sun is a huge ball of very hot gases. Its temperature is
15,000,000 ˚C at the surface.
 It is the largest object in our solar system.
 The sun rotates on its own like earth and the moon. Its
period of rotation is equal to 25 earth days.
THE PLANETS
“planet” which means, “ to wonder.” the
general characteristics of the planets are
Massive, spherical, has atmosphere,
revolves around the sun, shines by reflect
light, and has no light of its own.
There are eight planets in the solar system:
1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune
MERCURY

• Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.


• has no atmosphere.
• Is one of the hottest of the planets, and the coldest of the inner planets?
• Second smallest planet. Mercury is less than half the size of the earth.
• The orbital period is 87.97 Earth days
• 426˚C during day to -170 ˚C at night.
• Mercury has no moons.
VENUS

• Venus is the second planet from the sun.


• Venus is the brightest object in the sky. Aside from the sun and moon. It is called the
morning star.
• It is consider as the twin planet of earth due to its size and mass similar to the earth.
• Venus is also known as the hottest planet.
• Orbital period 224.02 Earth days
• Rotation period 243,02 Earth days
• Venus has No moons.
• Temperature range 470 ֯ C
EARTH

• Earth is the third planets from the sun.


• It is the only Living planet where life known to exist.
• Earth has 70% abundant liquid water and supports life.
• It has atmosphere that support and protects life.
• Earth atmosphere burns most meteors before they can reach earth’s surface. The
atmosphere helps to protect earth from the sun’s harmful radiation.
• Earth has perfect combination of weather temperature and atmosphere to keep us alive
• It takes 365 days to orbit the sun.
• Temperature range – 88 to 58 ֯ C
MARS

• Mars is known as the red planet.


• The day on mars is almost the same length as on earth.
• Mar has the largest volcano in the solar system known as the Olympus
Mons,
• Has two moons, Phobos and Diemos
• Orbital period 686.98 Earth days
• Rotation period 24.69 hours.
• Temperature range -87 to -5 ֯ C
JUPITER

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.


• It is more than 11 times the size of earth. It mass is 300 times heavier than
earth’s.
• Jupiter has a permanent storm as “the Great Red Spot”. Over 400 years
old.
• Orbiting period 11.86 Earth years
• Rotation period 9.92 hours.
• Temperature range -108 ֯ C
• Jupiter has 63 moons. Four large moons and 59 smaller moons.
SATURN

• Saturn is second largest planet.


• It is made up mostly of gas and is less dense than water.
• Since it is lighter than water, it can float on water.
• it has 7 rings
• The rings consist of particles of ice and rock, varying in size from dust to boulders.
• Orbital period 29.46 earth years
• Rotation period 10.65 hours
• Temperature range – 178 ֯ C
• Saturn has 31 moons.
URANUS

• Uranus is tha third largest planet with 11 thin, dark rings.


• Uranus’ 11 rings surround the planets equator.
• Orbital period 84.02 Earth years
• Rotation period 17.24 hours
• Temperature range -216 ֯ C
• It has at least 21 moons.
NEPTUNE

• Neptune is the eighth planets from the sun and the fourth largest in diameter.
• Neptune is she coldest planet in the solar system and the planet farthest from the sun

• Neptune has atmosphere made up of methane gas. The gas content gives the planet a
bluish-green color.
• Neptune has a dark-colored storm called “the great Dark Spot: which is similar to the
great Red Spot on Jupiter.
• Orbital period 84.02 Earth years
• Rotation period 17.24 hours
