Stator Slots and Coils

The document discusses stator slots and coils in electrical machines. It provides an example problem to determine the main dimensions, number of radial ventilating ducts, number of stator slots, and number of turns per phase of a 3.7 kW, 400 volt, 3 phase, 4 pole induction motor. It works through calculating these values and discusses winding details such as coil span needing to be odd for mush windings. The document also discusses the name plate of induction motors.

Example 10.1

Determine the main dimensions, number of radial ventilating ducts, number of

stator slots and the number of turns per phase of a 3.7 kW, 400 volts, 3 phase, 4
pole, 5 Hz squirrel cage induction motor to be started by a star delta stator.
Work out the winding details.
Assume:
Average flux density in the gap = 0.45 Wb/m2
Ampere conductor per meter = 23000
Efficiency = 0.85
Power factor = 0.84
Machines rated at 3.7 kW =, 4 poles are sold at competitive price and therefore
choose the main-dimensions to give a cheap design.
Assume:
Winding factor = 0.955, stacking factor = 0.9
Example 10.1 cont’d

•   Main dimensions
(i)

For a cheap design ratio, L/τ = 1.5 to 2 taking L/τ = 1.5

or
Example 10.1 cont’d

•

The length of core is 0.13 m; therefore, one radial duct 10 mm wide is provided
Example 10.1 cont’d

•   Turns per phase

(ii)

(iii) Number of stator slots

“Slot pitch should not be
below 10 mm”
Example 10.1 cont’d

•   Winding details
(iv)

• 3 slots per pole phase

• 9 slots per pole
• Coil span is 9 slots

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-
Example: The coil span should be odd
Example 6.24

•   a winding diagram for a 4 pole, 24 slots, 3 phase mush connected armature.

Solution:
(Even number)
Consider, coil span = 5 slots

3 phase, 24 slots, 4 pole single layer mush

winding (Phase R)

“Coil span should be odd
