INTRODUCTION
One of the aspects of international trade that
business persons find most challenging is the long
list of documents required for export and import.
But this long list is not just a barrier placed to
complicate procedures. Export import
documentation serves to achieve certain important
functions.
Main categories are:

Certificate
1. Bill of lading
Document given by the shipping agency for the goods
shipped for transportation from one destination to
another. It consist of three parties:
 Shipper- the person who send the goods
 Consignee- the person who take the delivery of the
goods.
 Carrier- importer

2. Airway bill
Airway bill make sure that goods have been received
for shipment by airline. It is an evidence of the contract
for carriage. It consist of 3 originals and 9 copies.
3. Bill of exchange
BOE is an written document. Exporter ask importer to
pay certain amount of money in future and importer
also agrees to pay the amount of money on or
before the future date. Parties are:
 Drawer-who write or prepare the bill
 Drawee-who pays the bill
 Payee-to whom the payment is to be made
4. Commercial invoice
Commercial invoice provided by seller to the
buyer. It has the details of the buyer, Freight
Company, seller, foreign customs, bank details
and import/export brokers.
5. Packing list
Also known as packing specification, it contain details
about the packing material used in the shipping of
goods. It also include details like measurement and
weight of goods.

6. Insurance certificate
Also known as insurance policy. It certify the goods
transported have been insured under an open policy
and is not actionable with details about the risk
covered.
7.Certificate of inspection
Certificate of inspection is prepared on the request of
the seller when he wants the consignment to be
checked by a third party at the port of shipment
before the goods are sealed for final transportation.

8. Electronic Export Information


This is a requirement for all goods exceeding a
certain value depending on the country of origin. In
the US for instance, it applies for any consignment
worth over $2,500. It is usually certified to confirm that
the information given is true and accurate.
9. Shipping Bill for Export
This is a document issued by the exporting country as
proof that the goods in a particular consignment
actually were manufactured in that country. It is mostly
issued by the Chamber of Commerce.
10. Certificate of origin
Certificate of origin is issued by custom authority of
importing country. The purpose is to impose import
duty.
11.Import license
To import certain products into the country, you will
need an import license to show that you went through
the right procedure and got permission to import.
