7) Matrix Transformations

This document discusses matrix transformations and provides examples of: 1) Determining the transformation a given matrix performs, such as a reflection in the x-axis or a 180 degree rotation about the origin. 2) Writing a matrix to represent a specific transformation, such as a 90 degree clockwise rotation. 3) Describing the transformations that map triangle A to triangles B, C, and D, including a reflection in the line y = -2, an enlargement with a scale factor of 1/2 and center (1,4), and a 90 degree clockwise rotation about the center (1,-3).

MATRIX TRANSFORMATIONS (2)

Starter
Describe fully the
transformation that maps:

a) Triangle A onto Triangle B

 Reflection in the line y = -2

b) Triangle A onto Triangle C

 Enlargement, scale factor

1
/2, centre (1,4)

c) Triangle A onto Triangle D

 Rotation, 90⁰ clockwise,

centre (1,-3)
Matrix Transformations (2)
• Last lesson we saw how a Matrix can be used to
transform a shape

• You need to be able to state what Transformation a

Matrix will do (eg – reflection in the x-axis)

• You also need to be able to write a Matrix for a

particular transformation

• Today we will learn how to do both of these things

using sketched diagrams…
Matrix Transformations (2)
What transformation will the Matrix below perform?
 1 0
1) Start by plotting 2
coordinates to represent
the ‘Identity’ Matrix
[0 −1 ] 2) Then plot the Matrix you
are trying to work out the
transformation for
A B A B
 1 0  1 0
[ 0 1 ] [0 −1 ]
y y

(0,1)

x x
(1,0) (1,0)
(0,-1)

Then look at how the coordinates have moved to work out the transformation…

 This is a Reflection in the x-axis!

Matrix Transformations (2)
What transformation will the Matrix below perform?
 −1 0
1) Start by plotting 2
coordinates to represent
the ‘Identity’ Matrix
[0 −1 ] 2) Then plot the Matrix you
are trying to work out the
transformation for
A B A B
 1 0  − 1 0
[ 0 1 ] [ 0 −1 ] Make sure you
y y keep track of
which coordinate
was which to
begin with!
(0,1)
(-1,0)
x x
(1,0)
(0,-1)

Then look at how the coordinates have moved to work out the transformation…

 This is a 180⁰ rotation about (0,0)

Matrix Transformations (2)
Write a Matrix that will do a 90⁰ Clockwise rotation:
1) Start by plotting 2 2) Then plot the new
coordinates to represent coordinates, based on
the ‘Identity’ Matrix the transformation you
A B A B want to do, and write
 1 0 them as a Matrix
[ 0 1 ]   0
[−1
1
0 ]
y y Make sure you
write them the
correct way
(0,1) round!
(1,0)
x x
(1,0)
(0,-1)

So the Matrix will perform a 90⁰ clockwise rotation!

Summary
• We have seen how to work out what a
Matrix will do

• We have also seen how to write a

Matrix for a given transformation!
