DEFINITION
Grammar Translation Method is an
approach that helps students learn
grammatical rules and then apply those rules
by translating sentences between the target
language and the native language.
HISTORY
Originally used to teach Latin and Greek
in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
Earlier in the 20th century, this method
was used for the purpose of helping
students read and appreciate foreign
language literature.
Objectives of Grammar Translation
Method:
1. To be able to read literature written in
the target language
2. To be able to translate from one
language to another
3. To develop reading and writing skill
