    Project Termination

    Introduction :

    Project termination is one of the most serious decisions a project management team
    and its control board takes.

    Each and every project has beginning and ending.

    It causes frustration amongst the stakeholders.


    The project manager and team members feel that they personally failed.

    They are scared of negative consequences for their careers, their motivation and
    consequently productivity decrease significantly.

     Project is completed ahead of schedule and handed over to client.
     Lack of resources
     Key people left
     Corporate merger
     Another group publishes results in same core area of interest

     There are various business, technical and political reasons to terminate a project.

    1. Termination by Extinction :

    • The project may end because it has been successful and achieved its goals.

    • It has been superseded by the external developments like technological


    advancement, market crisis etc.

    • It has failed to achieve it’s goal.

    2. Termination by Addition :

    Applies to an in – house project.

    •The project is a major success. It becomes the formal part of the parent organization.
    •The transition or transfer of the resources such as the project personnel, materials and
    equipment to the newly created unit within the parent organization.
    •If a project is a major success, it may be terminated by institutionalizing it as a formal
    part of the parent organization
    •The transition from project to division demands a superior level of political sensitivity
    for successful accomplishment.

    3. Termination by Integration :

    The project is successfully completed.

    The project product is integrated to the operations of the client.

    This is the most common mode and most complex operation.

    The resources are released and distributed in the parent organization.

    The property, equipment, material, personnel, and functions of the project are
    distributed among the existing elements of the parent organization.

    4. Termination by Starvation:

    Cutting a project’s budget sufficiently to stop progress without actually killing the
    project (budget decrement)

    Resources are taken away

    Organization don’t want to invest any more in the current project

    Complete documentation (accurately)
    Final payments
